Default Honey I shrunk the Yota, WPLc-24 project

It all started out as a cheap Banggood kit purchase.
Three weeks later we have a used and abused box and a handful of aftermarket goodies that more than quadruple it's value. Lol

Good news. Abused box but contents inside very new and unscathed.

Such nice details and very life like on the outside.

Lots of plastic toy like pieces in the kit.

Getting replaced with some nice brass, steel and aluminum parts.

For whatever reason my steel parts kit was short four 3x6 ball bearings so I re used plastic ones on the inner axle and used ball bearings on outer axle and pinion shaft.
Nothing special here. Trimmed a little plastic inside the axle cases for ring clearance.

Same thing on the front axle. The kit included aluminum nuckles and metal steering links.

Added aluminum axle truss/link mounts.

All this added weight down low too. Should help keep the rig planted better.

Hmmmm...dug up some old steel wheels for the build.

On to the chassis. More plastic things that aren't going to be used.

I wanted a lower stance and prefer a bit of droop suspension so I cut the internal springs a bit.

The metal link kit included new ball ends for the shocks since they get mounted differently with the aluminum truss.

Chassis together with no issues.

The kit version includes a hobby grade 3 wire steering servo. Which fits into a fitted slot in the radio tray but doesn't include a way to hold it down.
So a servo horn fits the screw posts perfectly. This won't be seen once outer cover is on anyways.

Since I'm replacing the plastic driveshafts I chucked the output shaft into my portable lathe and spun it against a file to remove the knurling so the steel driveshafts will fit. Filed flat spots for the setscrews to tighten up against.

The kit version comes with a 180 size motor to replace the 130 that the RTR comes with. Upon pushing it all the way into the housing it cracked on top where it is thin. Not sure why, the 180 motor is longer than the RTR 130.
I scuffed up the housing and glued a piece of Sintra on top to stiffen this area up.

The motor/gearbox assembly drops into slots in the lower chassis skidplate and held in with two screws.

The plastic kit links are replaced with metal links and ball ends.

The completed front driveline in.
I did have to drill out the link holes in the aluminum axle trusses. They came drilled and tapped for 2mm hardware but the links use 3mm ball ends.
No biggie. That's what I stock Team KNK Hardware for.

And the rear installed with no issues.

The completed chassis and old steelies mounted up with new soft rubber.

Got all the electronics tucked inside the front chassis brace. Hot glue is your friend.
Simple 20A speed controller, but no drag brake. That's ok since this is a stick truck anyways it should roll on obstacles.
And a 3 ch flysky rx de cased and bound to a gt3c.

Oh. Did I mention the Orlandoo version 1 sound unit.

All tucked away nice and neet.

Next up is chassis weathering.

Hate to hide all that aftermarket bling but this is no show truck.

First self etching primer after wiping everything down with alcohol.

Then rust colored primer.

I spray a wet final coat of rust primer then add just enough salt for taste.

Followed up by a couple light coats of flat black.

Once dry for a day or two I'll then brush off the salt and scuff things up a bit.

How much was all of this? Seems like an interesting project for the right price.

Well the kit from Banggood was only $35.99 but add in all the aftermarket goodies, sound unit and speed controller and you'll have $150 in it.
I had the RX and tx already.

But, it's way better than any other micro I've had. Sure it's bigger than 1/24th scale but this thing is built good with the aftermarket parts.

Started paint layers.
I have somewhat of a plan in my head. Who knows if it's going to work out.

I'll let these dry 24hrs and lay some more on.

Put some more color on. Ran into a problem with the sand color I intended for the final coat. So cleaned it off and backed up.
Not sure what I'm planning now. I'll come up with something.

Here's a teaser pic before I started paint. Just to show the size and detail beside a full size tf2.

Threw some flat black on body. Wasn't what I wanted but I'll let it cure for a day or two and then see what I can do with it.

And some chassis shots with the salt licked off.

I was just about to update my c24 build thread until i saw this. we are using all same parts so no need to update my thread. We even mounted the servo the same way.

Update your thread. The more the better. These things are really pretty cool little trucks.
