Default SCX24 ESC Upgrade/Replacement

Has anybody replaced the ESC in one of these things yet? I'm hoping to link this to my own radio and I understand this comes with an ESC/Rx combo. Just curious to see if anybody else is doing this and what ESC they're using if so. Mine will be here in a day or two and I'm just making some plans. TIA

My question is finding an esc with instant reverse. And I have never had worm drive so I have noticed that I cannot spin the wheels or should say the diffs. Do we need a brake on these little things?

No, definitely don't need a brake. We'll see how this thing works out.

So the first ESC I bought ended up just burning up right in front of me. BEC worked fine, but the actual ESC part was bad, got a refund.

SO, I ordered one of these instead -
https://www.ebay.com/itm/RC-ESC-30A-...1/223535342383

Made a 3d printed bed for the receiver, shortened a couple of wires and soldered the motor directly to the board. Works great. Only complaint is no instant reverse, but I think I can live with it

In my opinion, if you add weight to it you definitely need a drag break of some sort. It WILL roll out on you downhill. As for weight saving up top. I have a tactic transmitter and found this little guy (receiver) that should be perfect! I just need to change the leads on the servo wire and such (He never solder, spend six dollars and buy 200 of the correct connectors that will last you forever!) And as far as the ESC goes, I’m going to slap a castle creations micro in there. My transmitter is only three channel but will probably buy a new four channel to match this to go along with lights or rear steer possibly…

Tactic TR424 SLT 2.4GHz 4Ch Rx Receiver Only https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00IYDLIAQ..._IdRJDbDCG7YYJ

P.S.- Don’t know if y’all know this, but you can use the stock electronics as a pass-through for a new ESC. (Cool thought, but that just adds more weight up top then replacing it with a receiver like mine)

This little ESC I put in has a drag brake. That second switch on it turns the drag brake on and off.

I bolted one of these up to it. I haven't been able to run it enough to really see a big difference (those shocks I put on are crap), but others said they saw a big improvement in torque.

Are you 100% that's for drag brake? I've never seen one with adjustable drag brake, every other one like that with a switch has it to swap between instant reverse, and "brake" then reverse like a typical car ESC.

As far as swapping in another brand ESC many have, castle micro is probably the most common quality micro ESC, but there are certainly other options out there.

Any 030 from all the other micros should fit. The RC4WD Mini Gelande is a popular swap. Its assumed to be 90-95 turns and comes with a brass pinion. You could also drill out the motor plate and use a Barrage 050 motor which is a longer can version of a 030, or you can use a 130 can "big block" motor using a custom motor plate or one from GamyRC's shapeways store.

It's not adjustable, it just turns it on and off like you said. I just noticed mine has a drag brake when in the F/R mode (crawler).

I meant adjustable as far as off or on, that's odd that it has a drag brake. I mostly use the original versions of the China 20amps branded as XYS-BL20A without the switch, but I had one off brand version with the switch I've since traded away and the only thing the switch changed was the reverse mode, which seems to be the same as everyone else. Perhaps there was a firmware change good to know.

The RC4WD is probably as bolt on as it gets for an upgrade right now. Idk if they come wired, But if they do the motor plug is the same as well.

Default SCX24 ESC Upgrade/Replacement

I just installed my hobbywing quicrun micro brushed crAwler esc.
I had it on my 1/18 ecx temper but don’t use it anymore and find my 1/24 more entertaining and scale.
So far it’s working well and I like I have drag brake options and many options to program. I also like instant reverse.

I had to order the lower battery tray and esc tray to make it all fit without raising the body so I’m waiting for that but test runs are working great and the esc is heavy adding some weight.
