Thumbs up Scouting the Willow River State Park

Baller and I met up with the_ghetto_rig yesterday to check out Willow River in Hudson WI.

The location: MAP The green arrow is the parking lot we went to. The red marker 'A' is the closest postal address.

This is a WI state park and it will require a parking pass. The pricing ranges from $7 to $35 for daily or annual pass depending
on what state your license plate is from. Click HERE for more details.

The parking lot we went to is rather small. I counted 12 spots.

There are other parking lots, but Pete says they have a longer walk to the site-one with a LOT of steps.

Leading up to the falls, there are some dirt gullies with exposed roots. The one we explored was pretty good.
Hers's a pic of the bottom of the one we explored:

It travels up the hill probably a 100 yards or more. We found that it actually leads back to our parking lot. It was a good trail.
I think it's the same spot the_ghetto_rig posted earlier. In his pic you can see that it leads up the hill a ways.

But without a doubt, the main attraction is the falls:

The upper section on the far left of the pics above is used for rock climbing. We would probably be in the way up there once the
climbers are out. But the lower section and everything to the right of the falls should be free game. We didn't explore the right
side due to ice and slick rocks, but here's some more from the left side of the falls.

There is more under and behind the bridge on the north side of the river:

Overall, I would say that this would be good spot for us to hold an event at. This site may be subject to flooding if we ever
get any snow this year, but Pete said what's exposed now would still be accesible when the river is higher. Also, the parking
would need addressing. We can check out the other lots, but if those don't pan out we may need to find a nearby
spot for overflow parking. Something else to keep in mind is that it was pretty busy when we were there. I can see
this spot being very busy in the non-winter months. I don't think it would be too much of an issue as our group has been
really good about not getting in the way of other park guests at Taylors and everywhere else. But it is worth mentioning.
Bottom line, I don't have any problem adding this to the list of potential scaler spots for this year's locations. Please visit
the 2012 meeting thread to cast your vote.

And thanks to the_ghetto_rig for taking the time to show us this great spot.

I started thinking about this after we talked and realized that since the area we were scouting is between the falls and the dam, the water level stays pretty constant throughout the year..

I'm looking forward to seeing Baller's Go-Pro vids!

Good luck with that! Crawlers will be hovering before you'll ever see a glimpse of his collections.

Exclamation Re: Scouting the Willow River State Park

An update to the Willow River site-good news and bad news.

The bad news is that the park management there does not want us to crawl at the waterfall. They say is one of their most heavily used areas, and they fear we may be an annoyance to their other guests. Historically, the use of R/C's in Wisconsin state parks has been prohibited partly for this very same reason.

The good news: I've been talking with one of the superintendents there who has some R/C experience. He is willing to allow us to use a different location in their park. They call it the Mound Lot site, formerly Mound Pond Dam. It's less busy than the waterfall site. They won't require any special use permit, any fees, or any insurance.

I went there with Baller this past weekend to check it out. There is a small parking lot, and a short trail leading to the site. There is defenetly some rock there for us to crawl. Not as much as the waterfall area, but I believe enough rock and other terrain to have a good time. It's hard to tell what all is there as there is still some snow on the ground there, but it looks decent. Hopefully, this is an opening that could lead to more options in Wisconsin in the future.

THIS is a map of the location. And here's a few pics I took. I think Baller has a few more too.
