Don't you know I'm Loco? I've gone and done it. Not satisfied with creating half-tracked Land Cruisers, I've gone off the deep end with this build. With much thanks to Kenny Hauk of Hauk Designs for some excellent reference photos and permission, I'm building a tribute to the Loco Hauk: http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...924/sTxmtt.jpg And, because I'm a glutton for punishment and failure, like the real 6x6, mine will also be powered by steam. "WHAT?!" You scream? "It'll never work, give up now", you say. Well, no. I like challenges. Fun stuff to come. Gathering parts now. Starting with an Axial SCX10 JK. |

Re: Don't you know I'm Loco? It'll be interesting to read, my curiosity will keep me watching this build as I have a 1/20 scale live steam engine, and I have seen videos on YouTube of another RC steam car. "thumbsup" |
Re: Don't you know I'm Loco? I'd be curios too see how it works also, is there away to have a reverse gear or would it forward only There are a few Steam powered RC's video's but they don't have a lot of detail or explanation |
Re: Don't you know I'm Loco? I really like to see a steam punk style rat rod crawler that would just chug along. |

No real progress to show, but I found the donor JK from which to build. There's a couple nice parts on here I'd like to try and use, but truth be told, it's mostly just the frame rails and one of the axles that'll survive. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/924/VTv8dy.jpg Also, sourced New Bright body to destroy. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/923/MWJBTh.jpg Now, to braze the new chassis rails together, or just "join" them? |
Re: Don't you know I'm Loco? wow, really hope you can pull this off :) That Loco Hauk is great inspiration. Going to follow along for sure. |
Re: Don't you know I'm Loco? Very good sir. Another daunting task you have assigned yourself. I approve. "thumbsup" Oh, and no functional scale steam whistle equals not scale. |

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...924/804rSH.jpg So after some noodling and measuring, I determined that the best way to approach making the frame longer was to make it longer. I added some length from another set of rails I had sitting around, and some drop mounts for the top links. Same height and width that they would be if mounting to the original skid. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...924/4KHdJ9.jpg Another look at the mounts. I made up my own links the only way I know how, with 8/32 all-thread and brake line. Brazing is fun too. GCM transfer case for transferring cases. Nice straight drivelines, all the way to the third axle. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...922/0gu4qY.jpg The idea here, was to make sure I had a lot of reduction from the outdrive of the steam plant so, using the trusty GCM front motor mount for the Axial transmission should give me plenty of oomph. Rather than use a spur, the outdrive will connect straight to the shaft. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...922/lQsVdo.jpg Currie F9's from Vanquish look super badass and allow for the flip required for the third axle - so yay. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...923/MdpRNf.jpg The whole chassis as it sits, I think this photo was before I sorted out the rear shocks (I need a flat skid to mount the boiler to). http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...922/BarrIl.jpg A bunch of bits fell off the New Bright body. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...924/2SvPxw.jpg And as it sits after a few more cuts an extensions. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...922/QSeJRA.jpg More to come. |
Re: Don't you know I'm Loco? If your still trying to figure out the rear suspension to keep the flat skid I may have an idea for you.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...c2d141dbda.jpg Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G935A using Tapatalk |
Re: Don't you know I'm Loco? I've already got it sorted, but thanks. |
Re: Don't you know I'm Loco? Another unique build, cant wait to see the build come on full steam ahead. |
Re: Don't you know I'm Loco? what is happening with this rig? |
Re: Don't you know I'm Loco? definitely wanting news on this ! Just to see how looks a nice lenghtened New Bright JK haha |

Some progress has been made, but I'm still waiting on the steam unit. There's not a single word from the US distributor, but I'm hoping that it's being made. With that in mind, I can't do a ton of work but I have made some progress. I cut the roof down to size to make it fit. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...922/6xXKrI.jpg It required some additional contouring on the back part as the body tapers slightly in the rear, and now it doesn't, because it's shorter. Fixed. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...922/sJloQD.jpg Until I get the steam unit, I'm guessing on how much actual space I need for it, or what modifications I can make to it's stock layout, so, here's sort of what the rear will look like: http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...924/qJAfDc.jpg The whole thing will be hidden under a faux boiler, like the actual truck, which is kind of a bummer, but all good. Leaves me room to hide a lot of the wizardry. Body ride height also sorted. Required a few additional cuts to the body, but allowed me to use the Vanquish running boards as body clips. I like. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...922/inWdi3.jpg So New, much Bright. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...922/22fxN2.jpg |
Re: Don't you know I'm Loco? Looking forward to seeing this when it's done. |

Re: Don't you know I'm Loco? Hey, im just a dummy I can't afford expensive things. I believe it it is just pricey. Not to mention all of the specialty drivetrain that it requires to make it. Again I have never seen it done. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Don't you know I'm Loco? Plus I haven't heard of a non electric powered 1/10 rc Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
Re: Don't you know I'm Loco? Much like the 1:1, the steam boiler will be for producing steam as show, not energy for propulsion. |

Re: Don't you know I'm Loco? Also I believe that the 1:1 is powered by a steam engine, it is possible I just can't picture it in such a small package like an rc. God luck on the build, and I can't wait to see the finished product. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I have a Live Steam locomotive for my railroad( 1/20 scale), add a battery, esc, rx, and a servo, and it's RC. There are also Live Steam Traction Engines, already have the gear train, just change the gear ratio, add some rubber tires, rx, esc, and battery, and you're there again. "thumbsup" |

Re: Don't you know I'm Loco? Okay, well now that this thread has derailed (see what I did there?) slightly, back to the show. Big box from Germany came today. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...922/hMoJwc.jpg Inside the big box was a smaller, but heavier box. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...922/Fyo5cv.jpg Quality, german engineered box. You can tell just by looking that awesomeness is inside. And I was right. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...923/D2s8tl.jpg This black beauty is so fricking gorgeous. So precise in every way. I can't wait to sort through the functions of how it all works. Oh... http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...923/JuiVSi.jpg That's a lot of german. Time to OCR this manual and copy/paste into google translate! Two pistons better than one. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...923/CmX8FH.jpg And now, the biggest question, will it fit? http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...922/UJfxpY.jpg Of course it will! I measured a hundred times and bought once! http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...922/7U2TSN.jpg Can't wait to take this JK back to the steam age. Oh yeah, whistle unit for Choo Choo Choosing you. http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/800...922/pUm0rB.jpg |
