Default something for a beginner

just getting back into rc and looks for an electric rockcrawler to run around in the house and out in the courtyard of my apt i live in chicago so i dont have room to run anything nitro or fast so i was looking for something to get outdoors with and not worrying about ti getting run over by a car or not having enough room to run it wide open so i just need something to putz around with.
so i was wondering what you guys would recommend to a 2nd time n00b haha maybe rtr if possible if not something sort of easy to build i want a little bit of speed but still managable indoors for some cat chasing and stair climbing. price range would be anywhere from 0-400 possibly more if its pretty cool

or even a monster with some good articulation

can't go wrong with an axial AX10, or if you like the look of a more scale truck the tamiya CR01 would be another good choice, Hi-lifts are fun too!

The RTR Axial AX10 sounds like it's right up your alley.
There is also a crawling club in the suburban Chicago area.
They have some indoor hobby shop courses.
Check out the regional section of the forum here for info on the Chicago club.

The wheely king is a great rtr as well as the ax10 i have both. Take a trip to the local hobby store & check em out side by side.

looking for a rtr? artr?

If you dont plan on jumping the gun and going all out and mod everything for some comp use then yes a rtr is right up your ally. The wheely King, ax10 both come in a kit and rtr form. The cr-01 is only a kit and you will end up getting electronics. The Pti has a kit and now i believe comes in a rtr with the extended wheel base. All rigs all have the same potential. If you want to mess around the house or a park... or even comp with em. You can always mod em later. the cheapest rtr on the market right now would be the Wheely King. You can do a lot of home changes for your setup and be fine on the rocks. They all can be 2.2 based rigs. If you have a budget upwards to $400 then it will all depend on what you like. All companys have a great selection of aftermarket products. Good Luck and let us know what you picked out.

Well if you are looking for a basic set up that people use for back yard fun aswell as comps, Heres a few things;

A rooster crawler or a sidewinder esc... these are about 75-90 bucks depending on where you get it. You can step up and hit up castle for the Mamba Max esc aswell, this MM will work good with either brushed or brushless motors.

Motor wise; If you dont get one of the combo set ups you can pick up any 35t - 65t 540 Size motor (most common used is a 55t) on line, or even at your local hobby shop. These are about $15-$25 depending onbrand.

Transmitter(t/x) and a Reciever(r/x) You hobby shop has plenty for sale for cheap, or after you hit 30 days on the site or get 30 posts up you can hit up the "forsale" section here on rcc. If you cant wait there "rctech" sale section which also has a great variety of used capable equipment. If you go new you can try towerhobbies, stormerhobbies, amainhobbies, carolinasrc etc etc or any number of the hundreds of online stores that sell new t/x,r/x combos. Sh*t hit up ebay almost anything will work.

Dont skimp out on you servo. You want something with some decent tourqe. Dont use the servo that the radio system comes with. Look up towerpro on the vendors section or hit up a hi-tech, jr, or even a nice airtronics servo. Remember speed you will not need, just the oz rating.

Batteries; you can mount a standard 7.2V stick pack up top, or find something that you can mount up front on you axles. You can either go with plates(which a lot of vendors sell) or use velcrow straps, shit even tie straps ive seen. Stick within the limits of your esc. Lipo is another route, some lipo set ups are cheaper now than some regular nmh cells.

With all that gear depending if you get new or used you should be around the $400-450 range. Just remember you dont need anything fancy to go crawling. If you want to compete just try differnt set ups. Play with your suspension. Play with you link trig, play with the wheel weights etc etc theres hundreds of little things you can do to make yourself a better driver and you rig as competitive as all the others.

One more thing. Tires. Do some reasearch on your tires. Try out the stock lizards that are on it.Play with your wt setup. If you want to upgrade later, do some research online and with the local guys to see what there running. It will all come down to your set upand the type of terrain in the end but i tell you what... traction is 99.9% of the game.

The search feature is a great tool here on rcc. Use it and your questions about some basic stuff will drop 10 fold. Good luck
