hey there

The best motor you can get to start with is a 55t lathe.

The best performance motor you can get is a Holmes cobalt puller.

The Cobalt is a long motor. If you don't have room for it,I would use a 35T Warrior.

My brother runs a Integy Matrix 75 turn with the higher gear ratio that came stock with the axial rtr. It is a really high turn motor but it can crawl anything and it runs forever on the battery. I prefer a 55 turn for more wheel speed

I tried an Integy 70t V10 with a higher gear ratio thinking that the extra turns would give me more torque while the high ratio would increase wheel speed. It didn't work out that way. Neither torque nor wheelspeed where any better than my old Integy 55t. Actually wheelspeed was done quite a bit - down to painfully slow. I raised the matter in this thread:

55t vs 70t

In the meantime, I've gone to a 40t CrawlMax from JPCustoms. I am very happy with this one - great wheelspeed and gobs of torque, to boot!!

I am running a HH Revolver with a 3s LiPo and the stock gears. Good low end torque, good wheel speed. If I need more low end or high end, I'll just "gear down and volt up"

Another vote for the HH 7t Cobalt. Excellent low speed, and excellent wheelspeed. I've got 2, soon to be 3 most likely.

Ya he didn’t really want the 75 turn the LHS kind of screwed him on that. Very interesting thread you had there I learned something new. But did you see a big jump when you switched to the 40 turn. Cause if you did I would think of switching over from the 55? I run 7.2 volts to my crawler.

I've been really happy with the Novak Goat. Fantastic low speed control and brushless wheel speed all on 7.4 volts it's got to be the best bang for the buck out there. $199 motor and speed control and you don't need big voltage to get outstanding preformance. Check it out.

My 55t was at the end of its useful life when I went to the 40t. BUT, there still was a big difference in the wheelspeed even when the 55t was new. As well, the Crawlmax is just a better motor in terms of components. I'm only running 7.2 as well.

I'm happy with it.

Yea, I would've liked to try a Puller but my current chassis layout would not be able to accommodate the extra length.

This is a really open ended question. What do you want to do? Are you building a basher, a comp crawler, or a trail rig? It really depends on what you want. If you're building a basher, a $100+ brushless motor is probably overkill, but a 35T or 45T would be fine. I run a 55T Integy, it's cheap ($20), and works great.

I want to try out the Novak Goat, but I am wondering about the lifespan of the brushes, etc. Since I sold off my lathe and brushes thinking the whole world would be brushless by now, lol.

I suppose the slow rpms and tall gearing makes them go for quite a while even brushed though?

The goat is brushless. Brushless motors don't have near the low speed resolution that brushed motors do. Thats why most use brushed motors.

Uh, but they do! They're called outrunners.
I switched from a Novak 55T to a 790kV outrunner and the change in torgue is tremendous.
