Default Is there such a thing as a manual rc transmission?

Is there a transmission that can shift from a low gear to a high gear at the touch of a button on the remote?

Yes. there are a few.... The original e-maxx tranny can be shifted from first to second using a third channel, and the new e-maxx has an optional two speed kit...

tamiya has a few too, like the three speed in the high lift....

Is the tamiya unit manually shifted or is an automatic unit?

Definitely manual. You use a third channel to decide which gear you want to be in.

I have a question...

How would having a 2 or 3 speed help with rock crawling? Is it just a super low gear and then a low gear?

It wouldnt really help you crawl, but it would give you the ability to have a super low "crawl gear" and a higher "bash gear" in case you dont want to go slow all the time

The trouble with running a multi-speed transmission in a competition crawler is the added weight and complexity it adds, as well as possible durability issues. In my opinion, for a competition setup I'd run a "standard" single speed transmission geared low with a few extra cells for some wheelspeed when needed. Just use throttle control if you want to go faster or slower.

Im thinking for more of a basher crawler than a comp crawler... Obviously with a comp crawler all you are going to do with it is crawl... But for someone who cant or doesnt want a seperate rig for crawling and one for bashing, It would be nice to be able to have a super low( like 5mph at max throttle) to crawl when you feel like it, and then a much faster speed (10-20Mph) for when you just want to bash around the yard/park....
