Your best bet is to look through the classifieds.Expect to pay a higher price for somthing that is rtr or artr depending on what has been put into the rig.

how much is "spending a ton"?

RTR are few new. axial has the sc10 scale rig coming out shortly (days, weeks?) and has the ax10 rtr which you could convert to scale. the losi mini rock crawler is rtr but like the ax10 you'll need to do a few things to convert to scale-mainly in limiting the flex and adding a scale chassis and body.

the tamiya kits are missing some peices you could easily get and put together. the hilux, hiluft, tundra all share similar platforms so it comes down to which you like better really. they also have the pajero coming on a cc-01 chassis, which is more scale to begin with but may be too scale, depending on what your expectations are. most here like scale but with better than scale performance. all the kits will require you provide a radio, motor, speed control (mainly the electronics, and this varies from kit to kit).

good luck. scale is addicting...
