Default Newbie Question on Crawler

I have read quite a few posts on here about all of the stock platforms to start with. Only thing I see is everyone changes them quickly. My question is would it be better to build a crawler from aftermarket parts or start with a out of the box product and then make it better? Thanks for any help and sorry if I sound kinda new I just joined.

If this is your first build I would definitely direct you towards an AX10 kit or rtc. Here are some pics of mine, still running the stock chassis and it does great! (with the exception of some traction issuse's but my rovers should be in tomorrow!)
