i assum this is an nimh battery?

yes run it untill the crawler stops, then when ur done run the crawler with the tires off the ground untill nothing happens, the nimh and nicd cells have a "memory" and if u charge them when they are 1/2 charged over time the capacity of thr cells becomes less.

on the other hand, lipos can be charged and toped up when ever you want with no ill effect

x2. you have to fully discharge it or else when you charge it back, it wont be as full as when its been fully discharged.

No, you do not "have" to discharge before recharging. If you want to recharge, recharge. If you want to run it all the way down, that's OK too.

I still run NiMh's in my comp rig, and recharge after every run with a portable charger.

For all practical purposes, "memory effect" is pure marketing hype and internet myth. Do not believe anyone that swears it is true in a hobbyist/consumer application. It can exist but it takes very specialized conditions that will never happen in a hobbyist/consumer enviroment.

FWIW, I spent almost 8 years designing miltary/aerospace batteries.

I agree, charge when you want. I have seen some guy's do more damage than good trying to "fully discharge" their packs before charging.

I haven't had any problems with charging when the pack is low, but once every 5-10 cycles I do a discharge and recharge...just in case...you never know and its like the best of both worlds
