Question spring retainer......

I am starting to feel like an idiot. I'm sure many of the questions I have asked are basically common sense. I don't ask the question until I have researched it and could not find an answer.
I bought new front coils and spring retainers. There is a skinny end and a wide end. Which end mounts to the chassis? I have tried both ways. If it's the skinny end, the spring fits perfectly on the wide part of the retainer. But, I'd figure it would fall off during articulation. Thankfully, newbies don't get flamed here, unless, we really deserve it. I just want everything perfect or near perfect.
