Yes you will lose steering radius with locked axles. The alternative with unlocked axles is not being able to crawl anything.

By locking the trans, your crawler will not like speeding down the road - which is not going to happen, cause you will be crawlin!

I unlocked the front and it turned pretty good (use TLT and pede tranny for mine)...for a trail rig (as long as its trails and not really crawling) you can get a way with not locking the front diff...lock your tranny and lock the rear...now this is just trails and NO crawling at all..not even mud...but if your going to do any typs of running over tree limbs, up hills. You need the front locked. Just make sure that your front wheels can turn left and right to the max with out hitting anything.

for your tranny, if you can lay it down so the spur gear is on one side and motor on the other...don't mount it vertical, so spur gear is down and motor is up..way to heavy that way

got pics of your rig??

I have seen a ton of rigs with the pede mounted vertical, whats the problem with that? Thats the only way i can mount it. Well yes I was planning on going over some things!! so I will be locking everything. I will get some pics soon. Well it's a chopped txt chassis and narrowed by one in.
