Default Motor Questions

Can someone give me a run down on motors? What is the benefit of a brushless vs. a brushed motor? I am also hearing a lot about a drag brake, how does this work?

There's sensored and unsensored brushless and brushed. I think with unsensored brushless you don't have as much low speed control as you do with brushed motors. With sensored brushless you can have better low speed control. Brushless motors also tend to require less maintenance than a brushed motor, however you will need an ESC that can run a brushless motor.

I'm not sure HOW drag brake works, but I know what it IS. If you're running normal bevel/spur gears, on an incline the truck is going to want to roll if you let off the throttle. But drag brake is applied by the ESC and resists the motor from turning so this in turn can prevent you from rolling down a hill when you let off the throttle. With ESCs like the ones by Castle creations, you can program the level of drag brake.

But if you're running axles that have worm gears in them, you don't need drag brake since worm gears cannot be back driven (ie you can't spin the spur gear that's on the axle to rotate the worm gear itself)

Hopethis helps...
