I use an "Air" radio, designed for helis & planes.. works great imo.. 6 channels, 4 axis'.. complete control and mixability.

As far as using an airplane/heli esc.. nope.. has no reversing ability at all.. I have 15 on the shelf for my planes, and considered using one, but thought better of it. They do have a drag brake function, but not sure how well it would actually work on something rolling with more inertia then a propeller.

The advice you are going to get is definitely going to depend on what you want out of the build. If you leave it up in the air too much you will be amazed at the replies. On the esc if you are looking for a waterproof one then I would go with m-tronics or lrp, I have one of each and they are both good esc's and I run them with 2s lipos. So more details!!
