Default how to tighten Pede tranny

How do I tighten down my pede tranny, when i turn the Nut the whole truck tries to move even when I'm holding the spur gear. then when I let up it like spins back. Right now I have the plates still on should I remove the large flat washers?

That part use to be used on the Stampede when it first came out, then traxxas upgraded it and put the slipper clutch on the tranny. The only way to get that adapter is if you happen to get a really old pede or buy it.
