I am new to crawlers and I am I am picking up a roller ax10 with a novak 55t as my second crawler. I have no intentions of comping it, just playing around in my rock pile out back. What ESC would work that won't cost a fortune? My current crawler rolls downhill when I am not on the throttle so I would like it to have a drag brake. Is the BEC on any ESC worth considering or should a BEC be added? Thanks.

For you a novak rooster would be good. The push button setup is good and easy, but if you want something you can setup on the computer the Castle Creations esc's are the bomb. You can put what amount of drag brake, you throttle curve, lipo cutoff, and so on. ![]() |

For that particular rig I would reccommend the castle sidewinder, pick up a castle link and you can tune a fair amount on it as well. That is what I ran in it, and loved it! ![]() |

From what I understand, the Super Rooster has no motor turn limit on it, also has a bunch of other stuff that you can read about here: http://www.teamnovak.com/products/es...ter/index.html | |

Hmm. I run a FXR and love it, but since you are not wanting to spend a whole lot the sidewinder is a good esc. I went with the Tekin mostly cus of its size. As far as your bec? It really depends on your steering servo. The bec is used to make sure that the sevo gets the power it needs, instead of running it off of speed controllers internal bec. I have a hitec 7950 that is power hungry. I run a bec set at 7.4v, but if your servo isn't huge you can probably get away with out it. Holmes Hobbies has a speed controller that has an internal bec set to 6v. Check out the specs on your servo. If it runs on 6v or higher I would run a bec or HH BR-XL. |

i have a novak rooster crawler with a novak 55t motor in my ax10 and a tekin fx-r and tekin 35t motor in my cr-01. both have worked great and i havent had any problems with either. the fx-r is a tiny esc. good for when u dont have much room to mount stuff.

So if I get the sidewinder I can program it and basically use it even after I decide to upgrade to different motors and such. Is there a limit to the sidewinder as far as it's ability to handle better motors and such?

If I remember right it can handle any brushed motor, and can handle pretty hot brushless motors. For the price of it you can't go wrong. It is pretty smooth, and has pretty strong drag brakes on it. Just make sure you get castle link if you get one, as that is the only way you can program it.

If you are going to stick with 45 or 55 turn motors and 7.2v or 2s packs, the rooster crawler is pretty hard to beat. I had one in my scaler for a while. If you need one, PM me, I still have it on the shelf. No matter what speed controller you run, I would buy a BEC. It helps a ton with keeping the controller cooler and helping the servo have full power at all times. Well worth the money in my opinion. My scaler had the rooster and one steering servo and it did fine. Once I went up to two servos (4ws) and a 35t motor, I moved to a FXR with a Castle BEC. |

FX-R is smaller than a Sidewinder(like half the size), has a better drag brake, can also be programed using a PC, and was designed for rock crawling....im just sayin ![]() |

| ![]() haha. Its good to get other opinions too though. I did have a rooster crawler at one time too, but I hated it honestly. That is why I sold it and got the sidewinder. The fx-r is nice too, but for the money I think the sidewinder is really hard to beat. If I had a spare one I would hook you up. ![]() |

I just picked up a used sidewinder for $25, so even if I hate it I am not out too much.
