Dig is used to lock the rear axle and pull with the front or vice versa. This will help with turning, vertical climbs etc.

+1.
It can be a "solid state" device (like a PunkDig), or a "servo dig" which uses a small servo to switch one of 2 switches on either side. Each switch controls power to a motor.

In a MOA (motor on axle) crawler, a dig switch is a method of sending power to just the front, just the back, or somewhere in between. One method can be to direct the power coming from your ESC between the front and rear motors using a switch or relay. A better method would be to use an ESC for each motor and provide control to them from a higher end radio or an adapter. The benefit here is that you can vary the amount of power to each motor independently.

You can see a video of proportional dig here (follow the link and scroll down a bit):

A dig can make a world of difference in making or not making an obstacle especially in steep climbs.
