| Overall Cost
My friend wants to get into crawling and would like to build a scaler. I searched the forums and haven't found anything as far as overall costs when your basically done with the build. Could you maybe post a pic of your scaler and your estimated overall cost of the project. I'd like to see nice full built rigs, and some that are more basic but do well. So I have something to compare. |

It all depends on wht you wanna make, like stated above you can get a honcho rtr kit that comes with decent electronics now for 350-400 with shipping. As for me, I've probably got close to about 8 or 9 hundred bucks into my truck and hopefully I'm about done, I think there's a few more things I need to change out but hopefully selling the old stuff can help with the cost. But yeah say 400$ an you can have a pretty decent truck to play with |

those costs are the first costs going to be made and just a small part of what is going to be spent. thats how it went down with me. buy a kit for a few hundred bucks and a few months later I was over 1300 dollars into my scaling.. becouse this will get you hooked.. | |

Awesome, thanks for the input so far. My buddy has a 1:1 Cherokee that he wants to try to replicate and doing a google image search shows quite a bit of good looking cherokees built off of the honcho. I just barely got into crawling myself with a Losi mini... and the more I look at these the more I realize I want a scalar now too hah! this has already got me hooked |

I noticed you mentioned a Dingo, here is one of many directions you can go with one. I'm only about $355 into it, but I did all the cosmetic work myself and am still running the stock radio. Basically the RTR Truck ran $260 shipped to me, plus $30 in two 3S 2200mah lipo batteries, $65 for a new Castle Sidewinder V2 esc, sold the old one for $20, so I guess it only costed me $45, and maybe $20 in materials for the cosmetic stuff and scale accessories. Tack on maybe $40-50 for a half decent lipo charger (already had one, so I didn't put that into the total figure mentioned above) and that has you going. i got my honcho rtr off the shelf at my LHS for $320 plus taxes, so let's say like $330. then i bought some wheels and tires $120, then got some scale goodies $60 then a HS 645mg servo $45 then a winch which was $25 bucks. so i just added it up and its $580 bucks canadian so far give or take some taxes. i also have another set of wheels coming. i will finish mounting my TSL's on rims today and get some pics. im also building a chassis for it and stuff but it wont cost me much and its pretty much all just labour now. lawnmower racing season starts pretty quick (test and tune is on the 16th) so i probably wont be putting much money into the crawler for a while. just sold one of my mowers to my cousin for 200 bucks race ready and im buying another mower for 500 bucks. "Well now that I bought this, I just need this to go with it!" i.e tires...then the nice wheels, i.e the body, then paint, sanding, etc....Brushless motor, Oops now I need charger, battery and new gears....But compared to other hobbies (Golf is 1500 for a membership, and thats just the membership!) 1:1 offroading will wipe you clean before you know it AND you'll get hunks of metal yard ornaments. My Advice is to buy what parts, accessories, etc you want!! Coz the half-way stuff (ill just get by with an XL-5, well a week later I bought the VXL) never cut it for me and ended up paying extra in the end when i was trying to save money... |

I bought a used scx10 roller off of here for $150, a chinese $20 esc off of ebay, a $40 original proline fj40 body off of another rc forum, $30 tq3 transmitter and reciever, and 2 $25 a piece 8.4 volt nimh battery packs. Great RTR scaler for a grand total of $290 bucks! Last edited by Bukwylde; 04-09-2011 at 10:47 PM. Reason: spelling |

ya i got plenty of money into my golf clubs too. i play golf (lets say $1500) race mowers (got 2 of them at $500 each, just in parts not including gas, oil etc) rc ($1800 savage and the crawler is about $600-$700) plastic models arent that expensive thank god... you can put as much money into this hobby as you want. your still looking at like 400 bucks to get into the hobby. |

I called my lhs today and they're carrying the scx10 honcho for 299.99 plus tax and batteries. good deal yay or nay? hi by the way lol this is my first post. May i just say, in my opinion of course, the local hobby shop is the best way to save since you don't have to pay shipping and handling also the employees are usually hobbyist themselves who may have experience and may also be able to shed some light on your crawler conundrums how ever cheesy that may sound. |
