Yes you need the cap no mater what.
It is in the instructions that come with the ESC. It's part of the design for the ESC and is required.

Don't take this the wrong way but if you had done a 30sec search in this very forum you would have found this:
how important is the capacitor for the fxr?

X2 on CAP's !!!
You must run them or risk letting the magic blue smoke out of the box!
That would be an expensive mistake.

Take off that heat shrink. The solder posts do double duty as heat sinks for the FETs.

What Arecee is saying is that the solders posts on the FX-R ARE heat-sinks. (which was slightly off topic hence confused you)

So cut off the heat shrink and solder it on...if you run it without a cap you will end up needing a new esc.

So does the cap have to touch the wires or can it just touch the posts

Soldier it to the post but make sure you attach it the right way , Positive on the cap to positive post and the negative side of the cap ( the side with the colored half circle ) to the neg side where the battery wires connect to the esc .

the top of the posts on the fxr there is a groove, put the cap wires into the grooves (there is a pos and neg side of the cap), heat the solder until the cap wires go into the grooves on the posts, put your wires back on
