When I got my TLT, I built the kit, threw on some swampers and a 17t motor and just had some fun. It was like that for about a month, and then i transformed it into a capable crawler. In the end, I'm glad I built it like I did. It is a really fun little truck.

I built mine as a stock kit. I didn't make it through one battery pack before I started tearing it apart.

my experience with it is that building the stock TLT gave me a good starting point and I learned how everything went together, I think it would have been hard to buy a chassis and just sort of figure it out. at least for me because this is my first kit and first crawler. As my dad said "go slow and enjoy the process" although in the back of my mind I always thought this is such a waste of time if im going to completely change it anyways. One good side to it is that you will drive the stock and it will be fun but not really a crawler, then when you get the new stuff you will appreciate it because you had to drive it stock. I drove a half battery until I was tearing it apart trying to find good solutions, but I broke down and bought an SW2...

Just go to a near by hobby store an extend the links and lock the diffs, get a fast motor then you can crawl minor stuff(they had the right links at my hobby store) it is plenty of fun with no wait.
