Higher on the spur and lower on the pinion gives more low end. Opposite will give you more top end. Most just change the the pinion to achieve more low end. I would run a 4:1 or 5:1 ratio

Typically on a 32p setup 11 or 12 tooth pinion and a 56t spur. Give or take a few. 48p usually 20t pinion and a 80t spur give or take a few

Default pinion gear question

In order to give you a real answer, it would help to know exactly what rig (eg, SCX10, Wraith, Twin Hammers, Ascender, etc), what spur gear size, what motor and ESC, what battery (Lipo vs Nimh, voltage) and what wheels/tires (if unsure, the outer diameter of the tires would be enough). With that info, we can give you better input on recommended pinion size. Without that info, we're all just making blind guesses. If you're unsure, try posting pix so we can get a visual to help you.

also changing out the shocks to 100mm and a couple 3000mah's or better and a decent charger.as well as an upgraded servo . it has a 2 speed gearbox shiftable from the radio with an additional shift kit thats on its way .full locked diffs as well plastic beadlocks the radio does the job fine. servo is def weak.

There isn't a whole lot of info on the P402, but a Google search pulled up a handful of threads on this forum and a few others. There are also a few YouTube videos from people that have them. My suggestion would be to read through whatever is out there to see you can get from the threads, and watch the videos to see what people have done with their setups.

From what I can see online, that truck has a unusual transmission setup, and it's difficult to tell from their web site exactly what the final gearing (including reduction in the axles) is with the stock gearing. It's also unclear if the transmission and motor mount will allow a smaller gear than the three it comes with and, if so, how much smaller you can go while maintaining sufficient gear mesh without modifying things. (For example, some Tamiya kits only allow one of two spur/pinion combos without modifying the tranny and motor mount.). You can always try out some smaller pinions, as that will never hurt things (as long as the gears mesh).

right , also the spur is 93T , could i change out just the spur and pinion to say a 5 / 1 ratio without digging into the trans? there is a manual H/L switch on the trans itself also . If i change out the pinion , how low should i go as far as teeth to be ok with the stock spur? right now its 26t pin / 93 spur THANX Dave

Wish I could help more, but since I've never owned one, I don't really have a way to know what's realistic with that particular tranny and platform. That's why I'd suggest reading up as much as possible to see what others have done. If you can't find any info online, you might have to try being the Guinea pig, which isn't a bad thing. Or just get what you can out of it as is and hold your fire until you're ready for one of the platforms that has more options and available info (SCX-10, Ascender, TF2, etc).
