Default to grease or not to grease.

Hi everyone. Joined the site as I have just ordered a FTX Kanyon rock crawler. When I receive it should I grease anything or add oil to anything before I first run it? If so what oil and grease do you advise. Thank you from a complete newb.

Welcome to the forum. A good first pre-flight is to check all the hardware is snug - nothing loose. After that, check the axle ring and pinions for grease. (Use a good, waterproof grease - Marine grease works well.) It’s also a good idea to check the trans gears are greased. Sometimes rigs ship pretty well lubed, other times it appears the factory forgot. I’ve never owned an FTX so I can’t say anything one way or the other regarding their QC. Lastly, you can check the shocks for oil, and confirm the oil levels are consistent at all four corners. I’d suggest running a pack thru and then checking all the hardware again, and periodically as you continue to run the rig.

Enjoy your crawler and the forum here!

Welcome to the forum!

When I get RTR rigs I don't take them apart. I have this condition called laziness. But it never hurts to take it apart, ensure everything is greased and adjusted properly and then put it together and make sure everything is tight.

Stick around. Post up photos of your new toy when you get it!

Most vehicles have a diff cover that’s easy to get off to give the gears a look see. Taking apart some transmissions can be pretty involved. More often than not rtr trucks are lubed very light. I 2nd the Blue Marine grease. I lube the heck out of axle and trans gears with it. For universals and center slider shafts I use a silicone dry lube from Trakpower, but the same stuff can be purchased at home improvement stores under other brand names. Goes on as liquid and forms a wax like coating as it dries.

@hobbyjumper - Thanks!

A good, light oil I sometimes use on my cycling drivetrains is Rem Oil (Remington gun oil). It works well, it's light, and doesn't attract a lot grit and debris. Plus, it's super cheap at Wal*Mart.
