They become more capable once you lock front and rear diffs. Your only limiting factor is ground clearance. There are a few people on Scale that have made some cool trail runners with them

That Tamiya Hummer is based on the TA-02 chassis if I'm not mistaken, and those are used as trail rigs in a lot of places byt a lot of ppl... Just lock the diffs, get some 1.9 wheels and tires and a body and off ya go... There's one around here, a TA-02 with an H2 body on it that does rather well on the trails when we crawl here...

They aren't great, but do suprisingly well for what they are, modified touring car. I think it's due to their light weight. Some say the belly pan works good in mud, like the hull of a boat I guess. I opted to make a high clearance chassis on mine, which also allowed mwe to extend the wheelbase to fit the clod body.

yes, the ta-02 can be an excellent trail machine with a little work. locking f/r diffs and getting rid of the low tub and replacing it with a higher deck. search around on scale4x4, you'll see what i mean. just search ta02.

It's not a ta-02 but it's similar and is a lot of fun.
