Default Traxxas Rustler VXL?

Thinking about buying a Traxxas Rustler VXL. I will also be buying a 3cell 5000mAh Lipo battery and charger for it from MaxAmps. Has any got a rustler and what do you think to it. What is avergae speed with stock gearing?

Thankyou

james

I love them...I have a Bandit VXL and a Rustler VXL. They are fast out of the box but if you do the pinion and Spur swap...you will see blistering speed. I did the Lipo with stock and the problem is you can't keep it off it's back. At half throttle, if you punch it...it is on it's back...

I believe the price has dropped on them...

I've got 3 of them. I run them strictly on 2S Trakpower 4900 Lipos for the time being and have a blast with them. Top speed out of the box on 2S Lipo is just over 40mph. Once the new 3S Trakpower 4900's are available, I plan to pick one up just for speed runs every once in a while. And wheelies can be a problem if you have a heavy throttle finger. Here's a little vid of mine from a few weeks back:

Thanks for the replys. I can pick one up at my LHS for 200.00 pound. What would be the best first upgrade for the Rustler?

Thank you

james

If you jump much, I'd say aluminum shock caps or replacing the shocks altogether. A lot of folks will say an RPM wide front bumper, but I've yet to break anything that a large bumper would have kept me from breaking. As a matter of fact, the only things I've broken so far are the wheelie bar mount and a shock cap.

Not really...the gearing suggestions if you look at them creates a slower launch but higher top speed...

This is good due to the wheelie factor.

I just got a 30T pinion and a 76 spur to try and control the "off the line" launch.

My suggestion is to invest in a good LiPo 3S. Next would be the shock caps and then replace stuff as it breaks...I think you will be surprised...there isn't much...

Ok this is the battery and charger that I will be getting. http://www.maxamps.com/proddetail.ph...000_111&cat=75

What pinion comes with the rustler? Would be safe to run the Lipo Battery with stock gearing? I will be running it on grass and concrete.

Thanks

james

the rustler comes with 25t and 28t pinions and 83 spurs
yes is safe to run with stock and if you want to go really fast you go with 31/76 and with lipo is going to fly, around 65 to 70 mph

I recently bought the exact same stuff you plan to get. Stock gearing 25 tooth pinion the gps said it did 54mph. With the 28 tooth it comes with it hit 59mph, but I let off, not quite enough room to run. The maxamp 3s batery is whatcha need, lotsa power & good runtimes. the speed is so rediculous though that it's easy to break things obviously. So far only broken a steering block & A little piece of the wheelie bar. Lots of potential for mass destruction-careful around those curbs! lol Happy with the purchase tho-we can't crawl ALL the time!

Thanks Tim!

What would be the highest tooth pinion gear I could use with the stock spur? Sorry for all the question just trying to make sure I know this stuff before it's too late

Thanks

James

Since you're in the UK, you might want to look into the new Trakpower 3S packs (Made by Flightpower). They are hard cased and designed to fit into the VXL battery tray when you use the Traxxas expansion kit (http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXTKH2). You can find out more information on the packs here: http://trakpower.com/ IMO, the Trakpower packs are the best Lipos you can buy to fit in a standard battery tray.

It comes with a 25 tooth & an extra 28 tooth pinion. To reach the claimed 70mph the instructions call for 31/76 gears. On my rusty it looks like the 31 tooth would fit with the stock 83 tooth spur. HTH
