Default Pede or Rustler?

Looking for a basher. They are both very similar, but I don't have any first hand with them. Its mostly rough/uneven terrain around here, dirt, gravel and patches of grass. Leaning to the Stampede as its got the higher clearance and the Rustler seems to be aimed more for dirt track use, but I do like the Rustler for its lower profile.

Which ever I choose, I do plan on going brushless, as I need some kind of speed. Any mods that I should preform right off the bat with either? I read that the bushings should be replaced with bearings.

Too expensive.... I'm trying to keep it under $200 as this will be a basher for me and my dad while I'm tearing the WK apart for a crawler build.

Well, it depends of how you're going to drive it. With it's higher stance, the Pede is fine if you are the "point and shoot" type (i.e. - you line it up, do a straight run, reapeat). But if you like carving the turns while carrying some decent speed, then the Rusty is going to stay planted better and not flip as easily. Especially with a brushless setup, the Pede will require a little more finesse with the throttle.

And keep in mind, the Pede has a higer center clearance, but it's got the same diff clearance as the Rusty. Throw some big meats on the Rustler and jack up the suspension, and you should be good to go

Well, most of the time it will be darting across the propertly, hitting some small jumps, and have a small dog on its ass.

I've had both. Actually I started out with a rustler and bought the stampede parts and converted back and forth when I felt like it. They're identical except the raised chassis on the stampede. The only advantage the stampede has is that it comes with bigger tires. It's also more top heavy so it does better wheelies but it tips over easier. The rustler is easier to control at speed but it doesn't have those big tires stock. The flat chassis of the rustler does help it slide over things if you're going fast enough. To me, a rustler with bigger tires is really the way to go.

If you want a fun rig that can jump and still handle going fast, get the Stampede. Upgrade the transmission with metal parts right away. I only got 2 decent jumps off the house with the brushless before the transmission melted

Hey

The best sollution is to buy the Stampede and lengthen it by 3/4 of an inch and then putting a Rusty (or crowd Pleaser) body on it. That way it steers as well as a Rustler but has the ground clearence of a Pede.

What I described above is what my wife runs.

i have had both a rustler and a pede the pede with the brushless system is very unstable but it does pull som awsome wheelys on the other hand the rustler is good but still when turning you still need to slow down other wise you flip but if i had to choose id go with the rusty for upgrades out of the box get some good shocks on it, bearings, newer vxl gears, and it should be good don't get the vxl its an over priced peice of plastic

Just go out and buy a VXL. I just picked up a Bandit (Same chassis as the Rustler just smaller wheels). This thing is unbelievable. Wheelies constantly, and at least 40 mph on 7 cells. Will top at about 70 mph with gearing and LiPo.

I have a Stampede with a tuned motor and it runs great but constantly rolls over. Too high...but is great in grass.

Go with VXL...for a little over $300 you cannot beat it.

I don't entirely trust the SS5800 anymore, I had one in my pede, and smoked it (6 cells, stock gearing), got lucky and it was during the warrentee period and got it fixed, sold it to my friend because I'd since parted the truck out, and he smoked it with the same setup not a month later. It was fun, but for the same price range a Mamba Max would blow it out of the water.

stampede, you could also put the rustler tires on it and run it slammed down.

The Stampede VXL is the shit. Several of the colorado guys have them and they are a blast. It is for sure on my to get list.

It's already got the badass brushless motor, and a ton of other upgrades. I do know that a VXL smoked my pede and I had the mamba max 6900 system in mine.

Thanks for the input guys, but the VXL is curently out of the question. This is, for the most part, going to be an X-mas gift for my dad. I want a stocker for him to get used to it, and then maybe step him up with a brushless system later on. I do see that Traxxas offers their brushless system alone so that might be a future plan.

This is perfect for him...the new ESC can be programmed at 50% throttle for beginners. Trust me...if you go with an XL5 and then upgrade you will have twice as much $$$ in it.

I have a XL5 Pede that I would sell you (so I can get another VXL)

Not really. The XL-5 is $160 and the VXL system is about $160... and a RTR VXL is ~$330... I'd rather pay in steps they drop the wad at once.
