Default Tint your windows for about $1.50

I use to tint all my RC airplane canopy using this method.

You need to buy a package of clothes dye. I use black RIT dye. It cost about $1.50 or so. If you save the liquid after use you can heat it up again and do more tinting with it. So for $1.50 you will be able to tint an almost unlimited amount of windows or any plastic you want just save it and use it over and over again.

This is the dye I used

I mix it with hot water

Then pour it in my body

My body is painted on the inside and outside so I was not worried about it making the paint darker. It will darken the paint somewhat so if you have a light color on the inside it will make it darker. Not sure if it will make it dark enough to show on the outside. You will have to try it on a scrap piece of body to make sure. But I think it would be fine.

Let the dye sit in the body to tint the windows for a few hours. The hotter the water the better it will work. I let mine sit for about 3 hours I only wanted a light tint. If you want it really dark just let it sit over night. Or better yet try scrap pieces in the dye over night to see how dark it gets.

This pic is before the tint

These are after the tint

I just did a lite tint so it is hard to see in the pictures but trust me it is tinted The pics are a little out of focus so its hard to see the tint.

The dye will stain anything it touches so don't do it on the kitchen counter like I did. I got 2 drops on the counter and cleaned them up ASAP and it still left a mark

If you try this post some pics I would like to see your results. Like I said if you leave it on overnight it will make it a nice dark tint. Play around with the temp of the dye and the length of time I'm sure you will find just the right mix. If your paint will be affected by water don't do it but most paint will be fine but again test on scrap pieces before doing it or just do it and see what happens

I know it costs more, but why not thin some transparent black and spray light coats?

Does it seem like the dye actually penetrated the lexan surface?

That would work but its still painting it. I use rattle cans so it would not work with them.

I said I only left it on for a few hours so there is a very light tint. And I also said it was hard to tell by the pictures, but it did tint it I did not want it to dark for this this body. Leave it on overnight and you will see a nice dark tint but you will still be able to see through it leave it on longer and it will get so dark you wont see trough it. If I can find a scrap piece of lexan I will stick half of it in the bucket over night so you can see the difference side by side.

Its better then paint it will never come of and its more of a true transparent tint.

This is what I use on mine. Enough to do plenty of Windows. Only 3 bucks more. Not nearly as meassy either.
