Question Painting Without Masks/Sugestions Needed

Recently I have acquired a few nice rare bodies and three of them without any masks or decals whatsoever .
I cant afford to destroy these with my pretty much beginner painting ability so I am posting to ask for general help and tricks from the pros .

I most likely will be using Bob Dively's masking liquid for the funky bits rips or flames etc.

For the windows ,grille and other details such as door handles would you recommend using liquid or would tape or masking vinyl be better?

Which painting order : grille and other details (door handles, number plates)first or last?

Thanks!

well i will try and help. i'm no expert, but it seems that this tread has been passed over by all the smart guys.

i might even get flamed for telling you this, but its the only thing i know.

look into parma fasmask, and apply it heavy.
real heavy. like four coats or more heavy, cause you don't want to be trying to roll this stuff off after you already painted your whole body.... been there done that.

paint the biggest areas first... save things that are going to be black till last...
they will get hit when you do the back coat.

be careful what colors you put on top of what.
silvers like to be backed with some other color... white or black.
ok before i go sending you in the wrong direction...
here are two links that make it easier to understand.

http://www.rcracingusa.net/paintcan.htm

be sure to paint the bolt heads on the fender flares after you peel the mask, but before they get black.
i paint then cut.
some guys do the other...
it depends on you.
i know one thing, the best way to cut lexan bodies out is the "score and peel methed."
i can cut out a whole body in under ten minutes.
hope that helped, now go jump in head first and take lots of pics !!!!!

oops i just saw you are using dively's mask...
much better than the junk i told you about to be honest, i couldnt remember the name.
i use fasmask cause its all my LHS had at the time.

Thanks for trying to help , I know I have posted difficult questions since there is probably more than one way to go about painting without the masks

get out the masking tape and use your hobby knife to cut it out around your windows

takes minimal time and will work great, you may get minor bleeding (none if you get the tape sealed good before you spray and just make sure if the tape curls (just like window masks do) after your first, 2nd, etc coat to press it down around the edges again.

if you still get bleeding use body wash AKA nail thinner to remove any of the minor bleeding

I would agree. I use blue painters tape and Bob Dively liquid mask. You have to paint on a few coats of the liquid mask then let it dry and cut away what you dont want.

BTW, make sure you press down the edges of the blue tape quite well or the paint will bleed under the tape.

4 medium coats of Dively mask(the best)
Draw all you lines on the outside with a fine tip Sharpie.
Make all you cuts before painting.
Paint darker colors first then move the next lightest color.
Silver and black don't need backing but all other colors need to be backed with white then silver.

My LHS has all kinds of masks you can buy. I am not sure if you ment your not using maskes because you dont have them or wanted to try free-hand.

Thanks everyone ...I 'll have to go with Mr.Mikes expert advice ...I was hoping that it would be fine to not use tape at all I hate the crap ...

reason why i don't have the masks is because the bodies are very rare ...in fact some I cant even track down the maker etc.
My latest 1/10 Lexan Corvette Stingray body is made by a very small maker from the UK and he doesn't make any decals or masks for them ...
