Default Flat black paint

Hey guys,

So I just finished building my AX-10! I want to paint the body flat black, like a rat rod. I don't want any kind of glossy finish. So I bought some flat black paint in a rattle can at OSH that is supposed to work well with plastic. I have cut out the body and I was just going to paint the outside. Is there any reason this is a totally bad idea?

On a side note, this is a temporary body while I get my FJ body off of a Nikko 1/10 ready to fit, so I'm not to worried about the paint scratching or chipping. The grittier the better I think....

Any advice would be great as this is my first RC. Thanks!

jeff

Flatting the outside works, just use the correct paint. You can paint the inside a mix between silver and rust so when the outside gets scratched you have some color under.

I painted a B17 body this way. Painted the inside Tamiya Copper, rattle can. Then airbrushed the outside with Fascolor Silver. Then used Krylon Fusion paint over the silver.

When the black gets scratched it goes to the silver, to look like bare metal. Once the silver gets scratched the copper looks like rust.

Here is a pic of the body....

I used the Krylon Fusion on my Betty body and it starts to flake after a lot of crashes.

try spraying the outside of the body with brake clean. it should dull the gloss... try it on a scrap piece of lexan. I've used it to fog some clear parts of plastic, but you could paint the inside black then the paint wont scratch off and can still look flat.

The Fusion paint will not flake if you spray a basecoat of lexan paint first. That is why I use Fascolor silver before the Fusion paint.

I use a fine grit sand paper to brush the outside of the body after I paint the inside.

This looks sweet when done right.
