| Magnets?
Has anybody here tried to use some of the stronger magents to hold their bodies on like ProBoat does with some of their boats?

I've seen it done...most use the flat nickel size "rare earth" or Neodymium magnets due to their strong holding power. Button head screws are another clean option as well, similar to what carpet oval guys use. Edit: You can also find the magnets in smaller sizes...I have some that are 3/8" diameter Last edited by CreepyCrawl; 10-25-2009 at 09:19 PM. |

Might depend on where you put them, I'm thinking that I'll glue them to the body and use some kind of steel tab or screw to attach to the chassis for the "mounts".

I got a bunch of nametags from work that have tiny strong magnets on them. I was planning on using them to hold the hardbody doors and hood closed. They would probably work just fine for mounting the body, but you'd still want some way to center the body. Would be like velcro, but without the tearing sound every time you removed the body. If you glued them to the body, make sure to use the right type of epoxy or glue so they stick on well. The other thing that may be an issue is picking up tiny metal shavings on the road, but most "trails" and comps will be on off-road situations where that's not an issue. They shouldn't really have any effect on the electronics though, that's usually only an issue with some flash memory and hard drives. As long as you're not mounting the magnets on the elecs, they should be fine. |

I wouldn't use it in a comp rig. A good fall or wedge could take it off and cost points. Trail rig, hell yeah. |

3/16" diameter - 2 pack: http://www.radioshack.com/product/in...ductId=2102642 Or like I said, nametags. If your work doesn't have them, maybe ask best buy/ultimate electronics/staples/etc. to see if they have extra name tag magnets. I got a couple from my work, but only enough to do one vehicle... | |

The best ones I have found around here has been at Ben Franklin. Its more your women craft sewing beads type place but do have Pinewood derby stuff. So I did have an excuse to be in there Nice and shiney nickle plated ones hard to get apart!!. http://www.benfranklincrafts.com/ser...I-SUPER/Detail |

do a search for "magcraft" they come in various sizes and shapes these things are freakin strong! i already pinched myself w/ one of the sets i bought and it actually drew blood. i came shipped w/ a block of wood between them i also bought some smaller round ones which are about 1/4" X 1/8" (about the size of a small hearing aid battery) and just one one of them can hold up a full 12" X 18" tear away calender (12 pages plus a card board back) on my refrigerator door. it hasent slid a single inch since i installed it. and trust me when you see my size, it's obvious that my fridge door sees alot of action. I would be worried about them being too strong and tearing off the body when trying to remove it! Definitely worth investigating though. I am going to be starting a scale build soon and this has sparked an interest. Thanks! |

WOW! I am glad I read this thread. I was looking for a cleaner way to mount a body. I think this is a great idea. |

No problem Grump, I almost forgot about this thread too! I picked some up at a local surplus store called American Science and Surplus (great store, picked my ammo box that I use to carry my r/c batteries there too!) Haven't got around to mounting them, or rebuilding the truck just yet (still waiting on the Losi ESC/Motor and DX3e radio to get off back order), but I'm thinking about only using 2 magnets and sticking them to a piece of steel that's attached to the chassis so there won't be quite as much force needed to remove the body.

I used them to hold on the body on my blazer project. The rare earth neodium ones hold great. I got mine from michaels or AC moore. (a lot of times they will have a 1/2 off coupon in the sunday paper as well) I found that if you have a pair of magnets on the frame side and a pair under the body it kind "self centers" the body. A buddy of mine used magnets on the chassis side and a steel plate on the underside of the body and the body would slide back and forth, side to side. I also found that if you run 1 pair of magnets so the face of them is "up and down" and a pair so the face is "front to back", they resist coming apart on the trail pretty well. The only thing about using magnets on the underside of the body is that the paint has a possibilty of peeling off. Apparently the magnet to magnet strength is stronger than the paint to lexan bond. On a hard body this obviously wouldn't be an issue. I can pick this truck up by the body and the body will not seperate from the chassis unless I shake it a bit. To undo the body, I have to lift up the rear then slide the body forward to release the magnets from the front. Here is where I glued my magnets to for my front mounts. Here is where I glued them to for the rear, so the magnets were facing backwards. Look mom, no body posts! Last edited by gr33nlemon; 01-08-2010 at 04:14 PM. |
