Default help / paint

My question is can you use automotive paint on tamiya hard shell bodys. My local paint shop can mix some cool colors and put them in a spray can. So someone out there in rc land let me know. Thank you!!

all I can offer is to try it on some scrap first to see if it will damage the plastic or not.

You could go to your local auto parts house and get a small spray can of aftermarket touch up paint to try it with (cheaper and it is automotive paint - same chemical make up)

Automotive-grade paints will warp the day lights out of a hard body, unless you thoroughly prime it!

I have seen it done, an old friend of mine works for an auto body shop and he painted his Trailfinder with PPG. Im not sure if Tamiya makes their bodies out of different material, but i wouldn't think its much different. Ive used Krylon on mine. That's a pretty aggressive paint.

Im an auto body tech an have been for 25+yrs. I use the same paint, we spray vehicles with on all my rigs. We have went waterborne a year ago and I use it as well.
My tips,
1, scuff the body with 320 grit or red scuff pad.
2, prime the truck using a sandable aerosol primer
3, wetsand using 600 grit
4, spray your color of choice
5, **this is a must** put 2-3 good coats of clear over the paint. Even if your looking for a flat or dull finish, they make shinny, semi and flat clears in aerosol cans. This will protect the color on your truck.
Most local paint supply places will mix your color and put it in an aerosol can for you too, just ask them about it.

Good luck.

I used it on my Wrangler. This is from a special ordered spray with an actual Jeep color code. Just primered with auto primer and shot it with the base color and clear coat with automotive clear.

I even use automotive paint, like Duplicolor, on my model cars with the same process.

Hope this helps.
