| Stripping chrome from plastic? Oven cleaner?
Has anyone tried this before? Does it work? I would like to strip my Tamiya plastic chrome grill on my Isuzu MU and don't want to destroy it.

I stripped the chrome off the trim for a trx4 Bronco body by soaking it in some purple power degreaser. Also worked for getting the silver off my 10.3 wheels. Hope this helps Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I have never stripped chrome, just scuff, primer, paint. If you are going to bash it the paint will get knocked off anyways. I'd rather see "metal" underneath than plastic (depending of course on the color plastic/top coat). The paint will stick trust me, been doing that for years on both scale models and 1:1.

Tamiya chrome is tough. I used the normal methods, not a budge. I ended up with oven cleaner in a plastic baggie, took 3 hours .I then primed and painted them. This was on “the King” Tamiya semi build Hang up and Drive |

A bleach soak usually works for chrome plated plastic without damaging the plastic

Yeah bleach won't work on all chrome. You'll know in about 5 seconds if it is working or not, if it doesn't start hazing and turning yellow it's not going to work.

Caustic soda works like a charm on Tamiya chrome I removed chrome on vintage F150 XLT front bumper and Lunchbox parts and it was gone in 30 seconds or so. Same with HPI Star wheels I used a decade ago.. |

Anyone know what will strip the chrome on these 1/10 generic ebay recovery chains with hooks? Chains are chrome or nickel plated steel but way too "bling" to be real. I want to rust it afterwards. https://www.ebay.com/itm/RC-1-10-Sca...UAAOSwo4pYTVrb |

I would mist them with some flat black rattle can from a foot or 2 away, do it again until the shiny is knocked down. If you very lightly mist it won’t scrape off later. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

I know we are talking about Tamiya, but Oven cleaner seems to be the easiest way for the RC4WD chrome. Bleach doesn't work on it. Oven cleaner will strip the chrome and leave the plastic in tact. This is not my experience but rather someone elses. I guess if you have bleach try it, but like Phil said you'll notice pretty quick if it works or not.

Super Clean generally works for me but I've never tried it on Tamiya chrome, I hear that it's pretty tough.

Lye or muriatic acid. Be quite careful as these will burn you badly. You can deplate with electrolysis. Hang up and Drive | |
