Default What air compressor?

I just started using faskolor paints and my body came out good but the paint seemed to be rough to the touch....Am I spraying at too low PSI? I used 70 but the Iwata sompressor I have seems to lose pressure really fast...what compressor is the best for this stuff???

I got a cheap one at Harbor Freight for $149.00 It is a 20 gallon or more.

70 psi is to much. I use around 30-35 on solid colors. I use the Iwata too. If you are spraying fades, back it down even more. Pearls and such need less psi too.

Yea most airbrush setups require 25-35 psi depending on what you are spraying.

Does the Iwata have a tank?,or is it just the motor running pumping air? If the paint is rough to the touch, that might be from too much PSI. If you remember Floyds Purple and Orange Hummer and Hal's Green Jeep I painted...those did that when I shot them with my Pasche'. I don't how long you've been painting, but I shot everything at 40+/- PSI and thin the paint as if it were milk......JMO

DJ is right, one of the big keys are to thin the paint out quite a bit. It may take an extra layer to get the depth you want, but it dries faster and looks better.

I did exactly the same settings on that brown bug I did that everyone really liked around here.

I agree. I use a VL Pash brush and an OLD compressor that was my grandfather's. It doesn't have any tank and puts out about 15lbs. That pressure works great for me. You want the paint to have about the consistancy of milk to spray. That'll work great

Buy an old cheap hairdryer. This will speed up the dry time between coats.

Keep practicing and it will come to you. You will learn as you go.

be careful with the heat source tho. If it gets too hot too fast it can crack. Basically will look like the paint is cracked and bubbled

I usually spray main colors at 20-25 psi and shadows and other effects at 15 or so, just for more control over the paint flow. With Faskolor, I use Windex as a thinner and it seems to be working pretty well. The only colors I don't thin out are my flourescent backing colors, because otherwise they lose their opacity. Although my brush (Paasche VL) struggles with the thick silver, so i'll often do a few coats of thinned silver and back that with white. 70 psi on Faskolor, you're basically spraying dried paint.

I'm looking at these three from Harbor.
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=47407
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=92415
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=95060
Can anyone make a recommendation on which one would be better? Also, about how loud do you think these things are?
Thanks,
Tom

do you plan on using it for anything other than airbrushing?

But from the choices you've posted I'd go with the 2 gallon because it simply will hold more air and won't run as much.

If you plan on using other air tools with it I'd suggest something larger, it sucks starting something then having to wait for the air to catch up with you.

I probably won't use it for anything other than air brushing, maybe to blow off my rigs some times but thats about it. How loud do you think these things are? This will be in my basement so I hope not too loud.
Thanks,
Tom

Good luck on one that lasts....these days they are mostly China made junk. I bought a Rigid brand from Home Depot this year and it has been in the shop for a couple months for warranty work already! DO NOT buy Rigid brand. Harbor Freight, Campbell Hausfeld....they are alll China now too. Look into the exact specifics of the warranty and CALL the company's warranty number and see what kind of service they give before you buy! Been there, done that.

Get at least a two gallon tank, you won't have to hear it run as often especially blowing off your trucks...they are all louder than you want to hear....the cheaper ones are usually louder. Ask to plug one in and hear it run.

Hey guys,
I think I'm gonna go with this one:
http://www.airbrushcity.com/2010.htm
I guess I should've mentioned that I'm statione in Germany so I can't go listen to them in person. Now I just need to find a good place to order paint from. The hobby shop I found here only had the tiny Testor sized bottles of paint and they were 6 euro(about $10) each

I've owned the first one on that list for close to 5 years. For 2 of those years, I was laying close to 2000 square feet of hardwood every week and it still runs like a dream to this day.

It's worth 70 bucks for sure.

EDIT: sorry, the one I had was the same compressor, basically, but bigger. Harbor freight will also take just about anything back in any condition if you buy the $10 2 year warranty. I took 6 (yes, six) 12" Tile Saws back within a year (abusing them) and they replaced every one on the spot.

Wow, I didn't know they were that good about taking stuff back. So how loud is that compressor? Would it wake up the wife if I used it in my basement in the middle of the night?

You have to buy the warranty to return stuff with few questions asked.

That compressor will be loud.

I accidentally left mine plugged in inside the great-room of a house I was laying floor in... it kicked on at 3 a.m. after I was long gone. It was loud enough for the owners to be sprung from bed and think a thousand thoughts of terror within a minute before they figured out what the noise was.

That's funny. Would loved to see the look on there face!

I get the warranty too. It is priced on how much the item cost. So it could be more than $10.00 depending on the item price.

I picked up a 150 psi porter cable 6 gallon compressor at home depot on clearance for $200. It was the one that came with the finish nailer and a hand sander. It has been great and I think still on clearance. I haven't used it for air brushing yet but will soon.

What ever you get make sure it is oil lubed. It might be a little more trouble maintenance wise (changing/filling oil) but is worth it in the end. Ive had this one http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=94724 from Harbor Frieght for a little over 3 years. I use it at work and I beat the crap out of it cleaning cars(probably 4 a day on average)and air brushing one or two bodies a week). If you go to one of H F's tool sales you cant get one for $75.00.
