Default My DF-03 RA & TB-01

Well the rally bug has bit me again. I've been watching the guys in Colorado when they get videos up and whoever else I find on youtube. So I started looking on ebay and grabbed some deals and goodies.

It came assembled but I tore it all down to clean and figure out what parts were added and what needed repair. It came with heat sink bars, slipper clutch, and a couple of upgraded bearings. I went ahead and upgraded the front end area to try and beef it up the steering and front end some. Added Al transmission joints, hardened out drives F&R, front CVD's, and the parts to lock the rear diff. Power department I picked up a MMP & 4600kv combo, cheapest semi HD servo @ my local shop

I didnt get any pics during all of the madness because whatever grease was used in the differentials was messy and smelled But everyone knows what it would've looked like. Still waiting on new shocks, under body, WRX shell, couple of extra sets of wheels and tires.

Here's how it sits for now.

I've gotta figure out the gearing and will probably have to order some darned weird Tamiya pinions. Been searching online for some starting points for my gearing.

Looks good so far.

What CVD's did you pick up? I had some 3racing ones on mine and they lasted a couple batteries before the pins wore to needle points. If you really want CVDs Tamiya makes some, I believe they are listed for the tb01 or ... whatever the really cheap tamiya touring car is... (name is escaping me right now).

For gearing I went with the smaller kit pinion (somewhere in the twenties) and the stock spur, the thing moved like lightning; during the winter it was good, but in the heat of the summer after 15-20 minutes of running it would get really hot. Of course I don't have a rig that doesn't get really hot in the 90-100 degree heat we have here in Denver during the summers.

Keep it up and have fun.

Edit: Also keep and eye on those stock wheels after a while mine began to split and break apart. I have had the best luck with the Tamiya WRC Ford Focus wheels.

I did get the Tamiya cvd's. I figured they really weren't that much more price wise compared to the other guys.

Well I guess I'll be ordering a Tamiya pinion set since I don't have anything over a 20t pinion. I ran it for a bit last night around some cones in the parking lot and it got pretty warm but not extremely bad on a 20 and smallest spur.

I read about that on a couple of spots online. So I ordered some HPI wheels with some more meet and the Tamiya Focus wheels, along with some HPI rally tires and some on road semi grip for when I can't make it out to a dirt area.

So far this thing is pretty tough and fun. Just need to convince my buddy to get one.. Thanks for the tips!

Well since I can't drive I've decided to focus on some details. I really have to give the credit of drawing to my wife.

Quick test

Some progress, I'm taking time and being cautious. First body beyond a simple 2 color basic paint scheme.

It's a custom blend of mine using Parma paints. Fasblue, fasfluorescent green, faspearl charcoal, & fasblack.

I just start with the blue in an empty bottle and started mixing them all together in small increments.

Gosh dang I'm happy. Got my pinioned today and I had a blast after the rain. Setup a couple of skate ramps and objects and had a blast. Need to get someone else to get hooked. Maybe my wife.....

I've got 2 Subaru bodies and got a Evo X sitting waiting.

How convenient. I'm looking at buying one of these kits and bam, this pops up. Very nice work on the body- even more impressive since its your first attempt at something that complicated. I don't mean to derail the thread, but did you trim that battery compartment or was it like that when you got it? The only thing holding me up from getting one is the fact that I'm worried about my Lipos fitting. Any chance you could get me a measurement on the width of that compartment?

It trimmed it up some. It's still a very tight fit to get the battery I have in. I've been meaning to order a couple from hobby king. Here's dimensions of one i was told that would fit138x47x23mm

Yea it was complex but after doing it once it's not that difficult. Hopefully today I can get a scheme for the Evo

She drew it on the outside as a template then I used the oil sharpies on the inside to fill it all in.
