Default SUPER detailed Super Build

I should have my Super Bully axles within a week or so... Time to start a build thread and I thought people should see what truly goes into a custom build.
Im going to try to document every little bit of the build as well as I can.

Specs:
Super Bully axles (Duh)
Jr 8711 front steer
Hs645 rear (until I can afford another 8711)
punkrc dig
sidewinder esc
cc bec
Traxxas Big Bores

Hand built stick chassis (don't confuse hand built with home hacked out)

Need the adapters since the bully isnt like a clod where you can just stick a heim in the hole.

First start with a block of rough cut aluminum 1/2"

Square it all up

Rough out the design

here is what the roughed out "blank" looks like

Now you need to clean up the edges and get everything looking nice

Heres what the cleaned up "blank" looks like

Now they get cut down and cleaned up

Time to start the holes... they will be drilled out and tapped before they are done.

Heres what a couple hours of work looks like:

A keen observer will notice that there are way too many pieces... I have had a couple requests for trucks so I made a couple extra. You will also notice that these are not clocked much. That is because on the super bully (and reg bully front) you have steering that needs to horizontal.

Tomorrow I hope to start shock towers and maybe the backbone.

finished the adapters tonight, just have to tap them with a 1/4x28 tap so they fit the heims.

first I drilled them out with the proper bit

Then I shaved them down a little so the heim can sit lower (learned that from my 2.2)

Then I drilled the mounting holes to mount the adapter to the axle.

here is the "finished" product.

The one longer adapter is for an experiment. The fronts may need to be trimmed down a little as I had issues with servo fitment on my 2.2. I'm already at about 3hrs of work on this project.

I think it was $1200 actually. Best investment someone that is serious in this hobby can make. Without it, this build would be all but impossible to do well.

Default I am subscribed to this one,,,

jetboat,,Looking at your adapters,,are they going to mount to the original upper link mount holes ( top/motor side of the gear case)? If so are you using links from the chassis to the axles like most "stick" style chassis?

And,,,what brand/size of heim are you using...? Mcmaster-Carr?

Thanks,,I'm watching your build,,piece by piece.

These mounts will attach to the upper 4-link mounting holes. The lower links are utilized for the 1 shock and links (on the 2.2, super might change the shock mount)

Once I get to the point of the heims, I will give the needed part #'s.

well I thought I was going to be down on the build until parts/materials came in but, got home and there was a "present" setting at the door.

Rc4wd's packaging (layer 1)

layer 2
1 thing noone can fault Rc4wd for and thats protecting their stuff

as they came out of the wrapping (mmm shiny)
No stickers... may have to talk to them about that

1 axle with its hardware

4-link hardware removed and stick adapter added

mocked up in the jig. They came with short and long 4mm bolts, I chose to use the long bolts with some bushings as the short ones were just too short.

WB is set to 17 1/4", I was going to go back to my old 16 1/4" but I decided I wanted a little better climbing for some new venues we have been using.

Looks like a very interesting super super build!

BTW, is the vise on your mill a Sherline brand or other??
Do you happen to remember how much it was?
The vise I have with mine is too big and gets in the way sometimes.

What speed do you cut alum at? I cut delrin on high, but have not cut alum yet.

thx!!

The vise is a sherline, it came in the kit so I dont know the model #.

as for the speed, I dont have 1 speed that I cut at. I usually adjust depending how hard the aluminum is, how dull the bit etc. I also use liquid wrench as a lubricant, it does a great job even with hardware store alum.

The heims came in
Mcmaster part # 60645k121
They are rated at 2225# load so I dont think they will bend under the forces of the Bully.

They cant sit much lower without contacting the motor

For anyone interested, the adapters are now available to order.

the adapters have a 1/4" hole... well its tapped to 1/4"x28. Having the pic zoomed in so far makes them look huge.

heres the thread for the adapters:
Bully axle, stick chassis adapters

you have to PM me rather you want them for 2.2 or super and I will give you payment info. They take between 45mins and an Hr to make on the mill and then I have to tap them (could be faster but I try to make them perfect). The pictures I currently have posted of just the adapters, dont show the finished piece. They get cleaned up and shaved down ALLOT.
