Default Anybody broke the bully2 hardened gears?

Well waited about a month to finally get my replacement centers for my carbon fiber wheels (thanks off road Korea! Not their fault that it took so long by the way) and finally get everything mounted up including some new brood motors and BANG! minute and a half into the first run front end locks up. Pulled it apart to see what was up and found one of the hardened gears minus a few teeth. Motors aren't that hot (30 turn) and it was in a bind but nothing major. Anybody else been breaking them? Or am I just lucky?

Had any of the bearings failed?

These are not nearly as hard and tough as the original bully gears. I tried turning a set down and stopped as soon as I noticed how easily they cut. I have not broken any yet. I hope it stays that way.

just looked on the rc4wd site and i don't see any spare gear set available... I thought I saw it at one point. That is troubleling, as the communication with that store is difficult to say the least using email...

I guess it's time to order a whole new front axle for spare parts.

Post a picture of the gear you broke when you get a chance please. I'm interested is it the same one in all cases. I wonder if I could carborize a gearset or would that mess up the surface contact and ruin the mesh?

Found them under a "gears" search. $50. Im already $50 into repairs with cvd's. Might as well buy a spare front before any more carnage.

Im gonna ask my local guy if he'll throw mine in on the next batch he does. The carborizing process is a $150-200 process regardless of quantity. He'll do mine for free next time a batch runs. Im not sure if the surface face of the gears would be good after though. It seems to impart a little roughness to the finish. Im gonna talk to him tomorrow and find out what he thinks.

Just found out that carburizing and case hardening are the same thing.

A light silica bead blast may be the quick answer for smoothing things out after hardening...Im gonna talk to a friend of mine about home remedy hardening but itll have to wait til I get back from OKC. Ill let you guys know what I find out.

If you're really concerned about the finish you could put some lapping compound on them and spin them for a minute and then clean it all off.

I can't imagine that would be easy if even possible given how small the gear teeth are. I might be worrying about nothing though.

speaking of blasting, any kind of bead blasting that would not erode the profile but put heat in the contact area would effectively work harden the surface.

I don't understand. How do the size of the teeth affect the process I described? Just to clarify I'm talking about assembling the gearbox with lapping compound in place of the grease and spinning the gears for a minute. After you would have to clean it all out 100% and reassemble with grease.

So I'm guessing people have been breaking them? I really was surprised when I pulled it apart to find it was the gear that had broke. I mean my xr10 gears would have held up to that bind. Master basher I'll take a pic of the gear and post it later.

Lapping compound is a very high grit. It almost polishes. If you wanted to get them even smoother try tooth paste. IMO you are worrying about nothing.
