KurseD build: the Brass Bomber Budget Bucket

While in my favorite local hobby shop picking up some parts for a long neglected SCX10, I spotted a RTR truck and couldn't resist, so it came home with me. I'm trying to keep it as low buck as possible, but I have dumped some cash on a few frivolous accessories.

First I took it for a test run around the house. After about 10 minutes I was already getting tire rub on my front fenders, so it was quickly decided they would be the first things cut from the body.

I decided I wanted a darker satin color, so digging through the rattle can stash in my basement I came across some Rustoleum #7274 Antique Brass Metallic. Use some Krylon Fusion Satin Black for a base coat.

I used a hobby saw for hacking model car bodies to cut the bumper section and bumper valance off, also trimming the front fenders to match. Painted the wiper arms silver, and the body rubber area with Testors flat black. I taped the area between the cab and bed so the Krylon fusion satin black would show there instead of the body color and also taped the inner bed so it kept the stock satin black as well. Used some chrome ductwork tape for the mirrors.

So far I've ordered the following.

- RC4WD Warn 9.5cti winch with remote

- RC4WD Aisin hubs

- RC4WD rear hubs

- RC4WD Hilux emblems

- Proline scale hi-lift jack, axe, shovel, and pry bar

- RC4WD Marlin Crawlers tube front bumper

- Lights from rc-lights.com plus some eBay Chinese LED bulk packs and a bulk pack of male to male servo wires

I'm in the middle of greasing the axles and transfer up, so the rear is just loosely sitting under the chassis for these pics. Figured I would go ahead and share some of my progress so far. Oh, and during my 10 minute shakedown run I managed to bonk the front end on a doorway corner and knocked a headlight lense out which prompted the Marlin Crawlers tube bumper order. LOL!

Found this at the local Goodwill a while back for a couple dollars and forgot I had it. Found it stashed in the top of my 1:1 Craftsman box. It's missing some of the scale tools and the locker door is missing the pins that hold it on, but it still looks neat. Now I'll need a garage to put it in.




Looking around Walmart the other day and stumbled across this in the office supplies. I guess it was made for paper clips or something, but will be used to hold scale camp gear on the truck.

Nice start with some nice add ons.

I would recommend this low profile skid. At $20 is one of the cheapest modifications you can get to really help crawling. Sucks the t-case 5-6mm to get it up and out of the way. I ordered a white one and dyed it orange.

Helios RC is an RCC vendor as well.

I am running 3-link up front, so a little notched was needed but it's a bolt on piece with leafs up front.

Color turned out good a good tip for your mirrors is to cut them off at the mirror bottom then drill a hole in each part and reassemble them with a finishing nail cut down i used a dab of shoe goo on each end of the nail for a little friction but this allows the mirror to fold in when it hits something instead of pulling off the body

I'm definitely going to snag a Helios skid.

Might try that on the mirrors once they pop off.

Haven't been able to play with the little trucks much lately, too busy working on the 1:1 vehicles. Picked up a 1968 K10 and trying to sort little things on it.

So my Marlin bumper and hubs came in, the roller fairlead will not work on this bumper as I was hoping for, so I'll come up with something else.



Already lost a headlight lense, both mirrors, and the back glass. Well, we found one mirror and the back glass.

Just got my mail and BAM! Tags came in from Krawler Konceptz.

Wife and I were both Army. She's still in, I had to get out in 2008. I got out at rank of Sergeant, she is stuck at Sergeant due to her position, Sergeant is E5 in military lingo. So, E5 For Life. Got them as a surprise for her since she wanted them on her 1:1, but we decided against it with all the military being a giant target for terrorists these days.

Thanks for all the compliments guys. Though it was a really nice truck, I've had too many other family issues going on to enjoy it with the kids, so it is gone now. Maybe build another someday.
