Re: 1984 4 runner build 2 Attachment(s) getting there. I will definitely need to sand and polish the paint. Had to touch up the hood with clear and got some overspray on the sides. Other than that looking good 8) Attachment 358118 Attachment 358119 |
Re: 1984 4 runner build Love this thing |

Re: 1984 4 runner build 2 Attachment(s) Well i wish i was better at spraying but im not, ha! Time to fix it. Started on the sanding and buffing with 1200 over the whole truck. Got the visor sanded with 2000 and mostly buffed out. Big difference! Attachment 358216 Attachment 358217 |
Re: 1984 4 runner build clear coat was too thin is some spots so i've decided to redo it. This was my first time using 2k spraymax clear i was so worried about runs i think it just went on too thin. I've gotten much better results with rustoleum clear, hopefully second time is a charm! |
Re: 1984 4 runner build Bummer about the clear but the truck really does look great! |
Re: 1984 4 runner build Thanks. i'm not really excited about doing it again but if i can get a good clean coat on i wont have to go through all the sand and buffing. I'm going to try to get the spray can warmer and try to get the garage a bit warmer too. 60 deg is pretty low but thats about what i have to work with right now. I probably have a few more excuses but that its for now, ha! |
Re: 1984 4 runner build 4 Attachment(s) Well after waiting a week for new clear coat I managed to get it resprayed last weekend. Turned out decent, i had a few booboos that give it that unprofessional touch :ror: but nothing i can't live with. Basically had a couple pieces of what looked to be tack cloth and tried to remove them. Then had to ad more clear. Then when you ad more in one spot you have to ad the whole truck over because of the over spray and then it started to run a little here and there. Then it almost glued the doors shut because of the clear running, oh $hit! Had to open the doors a bit and wipe the excess, ect.. It was not the funnest thing i did last weekend.. It definitely has plenty of clear on it though! The roof has a bit of orange peel but i think i'll sand it out. Attachment 358793 Attachment 358794 Resprayed the shock hoops and the visor. The visor turned out amazing! Looks like a piece of jewelry, wished the whole truck turned out that way! Now time for windows.... Attachment 358795 Attachment 358796 |
Re: 1984 4 runner build WOW paint looks great IMO, smooth as glass! |

Re: 1984 4 runner build 4 Attachment(s) Thanks, I appreciate it! It will be good. Sometimes its good to have a few things you don't like about it so its easier to handle a ding or two when you drive it. "thumbsup" Got a few pictures outside today. Attachment 358804 Attachment 358805 Attachment 358806 Attachment 358807 You might notice an 85 runner in the last picture that I picked up a few weeks ago... Total nostalgic sickness in effect!! |
Re: 1984 4 runner build That is incredible, hopefully with some experience I can make something at least half the quality of this. |
Re: 1984 4 runner build Thanks, you for sure can. "thumbsup" I'm always impressed at the quality of builds that people do on here. For me it takes time and i often redo things or change my mind. But last night i was going to finish fitting the lights and instead i wasted an hour staring at it and opening and closing the doors and the hood. :) |
Re: 1984 4 runner build I just bought one of these bodies and love seeing yours...mine is going to be a scale version of my 87. I may copy your chassis setup pretty much, glad to see it so laid out, thanks a ton!https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...419cb823ea.jpg Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk |
Re: 1984 4 runner build NIce Yota. Good luck with your build. Let me know if you do a build thread on it. |
Re: 1984 4 runner build 3 Attachment(s) So i originally thought i was going to use spray paint window tinting for the back windows but every test that i did it looked kinda crappy. I finally went to Oriellys and got some window tint except i wasn't paying attention and when i got home i saw it was the non-adhesive vinyl kind. Figured what the heck and thought i try it anyways and decided it was a waste of $13. Went back to the store and got some 20% real window tint in a windshield strip kit. Came with a little bottle of film spray and all. Attachment 359126 Tried out some test pieces and it looked good so I moved on to the windows and got that all done. Attachment 359127 So i made both a regular back window and a diamond plate one as well to switch out. I lost the back window in it at one point (long story) so to improvise i cut and rolled a piece of diamond plate and threw it in. Now i have both. "thumbsup" Attachment 359128 |
Re: 1984 4 runner build your thread makes me wish I still had my 89 SR5 3.0.... redid the entire body, custom bumpers, tire carrier and working AC and cruise control which were a treat while traveling to and from the trail head. I understand your comment about losing the back window.... between the rust prone tailgate and that crazy power lift mechanism I had a few issues over the years. |
Re: 1984 4 runner build Cool. Yeah i'm not sure how much i'm going to do to this one. Right now its just fun hopping in and going for a drive with the kiddos. Love the feel of the old thing, even smells the same |
Re: 1984 4 runner build Build looks awesome man. May be far fetched but a rear roll down window would set it over the top like the 1:1 miss my 87 wish i still had it |
Re: 1984 4 runner build Any updates on this bad boy? One of favorite 4runner builds |
