Default Filling stock shocks with oil

Has anyone taken the stock Ultimate Scale shocks, removed the springs and filled them with oil? If so, what weight of oil did you use and how are they holding up? I thought about doing this.

I did that for my cousin's truck and they worked pretty good with 5K diff oil. None of the actual shock oils I tried were heavy enough to produce adequate damper action in such a small bodied shock.

He ran them for a few months then the upper bushings fell out on 3 of the shocks and that was the end of the stockers.

Just as svt923 says...diff oil works best in them (3k or 5k). The bushings do tend to wear out relatively easily, but if you're industrious, you can glue (or JB Weld) them back into place to get more life out of them.

What is a longer lasting shock to replace them. Nothing fancy just long life quality shocks.

There are plenty of good shock choices. Among relatively narrow-bodied shocks, I've had good luck with the RC4WD RRD Emulsions and Proline Scalers. Both can take plenty of abuse and perform well with the right setup. Assuming you're still running the leafs, those can (and should) be run without coil springs.
