Default Servo options?

Finally had a chance to take the truck out today. And about 20 minutes into its maiden voyage, the servo went full left. Like so far to the left that the servo rod was at a 45 degree angle to the cross member. You can turn the truck off and straighten the wheels out, but as soon as you turn it back on, it does it again. And it doesnt respond to any input from the tx. So is it safe to assume that it shorted out or something? Which brings me to the actual question, what options are out there for a waterproof servo for these trucks. I plan on getting redcat to warranty this one so I can have a spare, but I really want to get one on there that I dont have to worry about. So what are you guys running that have had to replace it? Thanks guys.

Definitely either the PowerHD 20kg, 23kg, or 25kg.

I went with the Turnigy MG959v2 and I'm quite happy with it. 2x the torque of the stock servo, and still runs on the ESC's BEC.

Just keep in mind when upgrading servos:

If you don't use a uBEC, the ESC robs power from the servo to run the motor or robs power from the motor to run the servo. It cannot run both at full power at the same time. Running a uBEC ensures that both the motor and servo receive the required voltage and amperage at all times.

$12 JX PDI-6221MG 20KG Large Torque Digital Standard Servo (277oz torque) from Banggood. Shipping is usually free or about $1. Note the 180deg version requires a fancy radio to get full steering.
For a UBEC I use these MP2307 Chip Mini 3A DC-DC Converter Step Down Adjustable 3V 5V 16V Power at $0.40 each shipped and set them to 6v using a multimeter:

The only thing that would scare me with that uBEC is maybe it could get accidentally dialed to a voltage that would burn up my receiver and/or servo. With the Hobbywing 5v/6v uBEC (for example) you manually select with jumpers and there's no real potential for accidents it can be set at 5v or 6v...period. Or, such as with the Castle Creations uBEC, you select your desired vintage with a computer link and there's no risk of accidentally dialing it higher.

Also, on that servo, I've seen great reviews on it, but I don't think it's waterproofed. However they can easily be made waterproof with some research and effort.

Noob question I know....but how do I know if I need to wire in an external bec for a new servo? But honestly, I think I would really just like a plug an play servo for simplicity. This truck is my daughters and doesnt need to me real competitive, just reliable.

If you are running on the stock battery or 2S you should be able to get by without an external BEC, unless you get a really power hungry servo.

Agreed. The BEC in the WP-1040 ESC seems to be pretty good. I don't get any brown outs with my MG959v2 servo, and it's 6V, not 5V like some of the variants of the WP-1040 out there.
