Default Speed Weigand Slide in Camper

So... I was teaching some cub scouts how to build stuff. It was a simple little project & you could easily see how it went together. But, if you didn't follow the directions you could get yourself in trouble.

I left them with "You can build anything you want, If you can simply learn to follow instructions".

So the first thing I noticed about the Speed Weigand Slide in Camper kit was the cab window was way to big. But I glued it in anyway... then I noticed the top sleeper window was way too small... sort of like a.... cab window.

Anyway, I had planned to document the assembly of this kit but it went together so smooth, I was about done with it before I even thought about it.

It amazed me how quick this went together. CNC work is great, everything fit perfect. Nice to have someone else do all the thinkin' measurein' and cuttin'.

You really have a lot of room to do your own thing too. I plan to glue tiny wraith oil pans all over the outside.

1rcmonster has documented the build much better than I. Here is his link:

So, I used medium CA. Litterally started gluing things together while I was grilling and couldn't stop. I like CA because I'm too impatient for glue to dry.

I have a little set of machinest squares which came in handy.

Next day, it was 60 degrees here so I used bondo glazing putty & gooed up all the corners.

I plan to put this in my scale campground I'm building for next year.

I'm working on a trailer & tent & this slide in. Made the sign this past fall & a friend of mine made the teardrop.

Thanks. Yea, buddy of mine did the tear drop. It's based on a "rough rider little guy" off road trailer.

As you can see by the sign, I'm going retro with the campground & working on a '64 Shasta trailer too:

His work is top notch but he rarely posts stuff. I'm lucky, he brings his builds over for me to look at. But the hitch is all machined. jack stand is brass & works, wire mesh is all triangles cut out of sytrene sheet. very cool trailer.

Nothing too exiciting as far as updates with the REO speed weigand.

ready for primer:

Yes, I just spoke with speed, he has 'em ready to ship.

I've got mine all preped and ready to paint. But... the urge to add detail while it's still primer is sucking me in.

I build slow, partly because I have a number of projects going at once. this is good for me because I'm very impatient. so.... I get side tracked between coats of paint.

But... the key to painting wood is lot's of sandable primer till you get it to a point that you can't see any grain or seams.

almost there.

Krylon from walmart. In the past, I've used dupli-color from Autozone. when you get to the color, they have a much better selection. I've done this with painted boat hulls.

But hobby budget continues to be a challenge & the Krylon is half the price, worked well & as long as you're ok with the color selection. I like it.

As a rule, I never mix brands of paint between any coats. so if I start with duplicolor, I go all the way with it. someone smarter than I go probably make it work but I've had too many bad experiences with one paint not reacting well with another.

too many projects at the moment... I did get some paint on this.

One tip, and I should have know this, if you plan to wet sand, seal the inside so you can get it wet. I do this with boats but just didn't think... few seams popped open when I got it wet.

Wow I didn't know you had a build thread... you guys have to post the links in my threads so I can find them I found this one from Googling for something else.

Doug it looks great, that is an amazingly smooth finish to paint ;) great work. The tint on the windows looks really good too, is that film? my spray always turns a little blotchy.

Did you need another window?
