| My First thing made!!!! Strong Arm Winch!!!
Been watching all you guys get down brazing and stuff , so I decided to give my hand at it. I have had this idea on my brain for a few months and decided this was going to be my first challenge. Its brass with an inner bendable copper tube to have the winch line go thru !! You will see but for now here are a few pics. Will mount soon and more pics too! |

Nice job! Is it going to have a crank and actually work? Looks like I wasn't the only one doing some brass work today. I made a trailer tongue jack this afternoon. I like working with brass, it's so simple!

Thanks bro, No its going to have a servo winch hooked under the bed of my 6x6 called Big Baby ! Busy weekend ahead with all my baby moms and thats including the wife plus a b day for my baby boy Monday but will be sneaking time to complete. I think my next phase is to prime it and hit it with bed liner! Last edited by 17dean; 05-11-2012 at 05:18 PM. Reason: spelling | |

I would ditch that lead free solder in a heartbeat! I use 60/40 and it works awesome. Just wondering what torch you are using. I use a little benzomatic butaine pen torch, it works great. It has a really fine flame to do precise joints and such. Make sure you get everything plenty hot, the solder should wick all the way into the joint, not just sit on top. On some of your joints you have some copper discoloring, that should be all around the joint if you get proper heat into it. Also make sure everything is CLEAN! I take some 1000 grit sandpaper and sand everything before I solder it, gotta get all that oxidation off. Not only is it easier to do before it's soldered but it will let the paint adhere to it better as well. I sand everything and wipe it off with denatured alcohol before soldering. I also wipe everything down after as well to remove the leftover flux, paint won't stick to that either. Clean brass makes the WORLD of difference. It looks like your cuts on the brass are nice and clean too, that helps a lot. If it fits together nice before solder it will make a nice joint after. That notch on the tube looks perfect. Take your time cutting and being accurate with measurements. I use a little balsa wood miter box to cut my brass, it has 90 and 45 degree notches so I can get accurate cuts. All these things add up and together make it look better and easier to do. Here is how mine looks, not too much solder, good heat (copper discoloring) and the solder has wicked in between the parts. Oh ok, lol. We have etching stuff at work and I was thinking about trying it to prep the brass. What else do you have in the works?

| Re: My First thing made!!!! Strong Arm Winch!!! Made this 10th scale nascar for brass tube with solder gun. Uses 12th scale pan car rear end on trailing arms on coils. Steers from under dash through steering column. Think i got lead poisoning during this build, cant remember? |

Thankx, that was my first venture into brass and my skill and technique improved over the build, somewhat... I need resurrect the build and put a 1.9 scale axle under rear, motor up front with one of those disruptor planetary trannies. Not trying steal your thunder 17dean, saw all that brass and got excited. Last edited by RiceBurner; 07-16-2012 at 03:02 PM. |

Thankx, For me it was a lack of tools to work with/weld steel or aluminum. Made that carwith solder gun, really, hacksaw, files, tin snipes and dremel. Would of used aluminum in ideal situation.
