| NEW UTRCRC Chassis...
Well several weeks ago PinchFlat and I set out to make a competition specific crawler. We bounced a few ideas off each other and this is the cultivation of all the ideas that we had: Had to weight less that 5lbs complete, ready to run The chassis needed to be no taller than the top of the tires (6.5” tire) this is key All the electronics would not vary more than ˝” vertically off center from the motors (this includes ESC, Servos and Batteries) another key factor It had to be able to crawl on a 60 degree horizontal plane It had to have a 15” vertical break over 16” Wheelbase It had to have a wide skid plate design, to reduce the amount of hang-ups. It needed to have a minimum center ground clearance of 4.5” It had to have no more than 70 degrees of articulation It had to be fully adjustable to any type of crawling, including: o Wheelbase o Ride height o Articulation Needed to have 4 wheel steering, Crab walk and independent front and rear wheel steering. Most importantly it needed to be SIMPLE and UGLY. So based on these ideas and many other principles we started building. Each of us building separately only using the principles listed. The result is the new UTRCRC Team Chassis. We call it the V2. The name was chosen from the fact that this is the second version of each of our first built chassis. You all have seen a preview of PinchFlats rig (he just couldn’t help but show it off – HEHE). Here are the two chassis designs: Needless to say we where both excited to get out and tested. Well this last Wednesday we had the opportunity to do just that. We hit our old stomping grounds where we do all of our testing. It’s consistent and we know exactly what the previous rigs could and could not due. Our first thoughts were, these things look like a raccoon that had been run over by a semi. They are low, very low. We took the very same lines that troubled the rigs in the past and where able to do them with ease. The difference is incredible. They have more clearance and are far more stable than anything we have run in the past. The new steering system adds a whole new dimension to crawling. The ability to change from 4ws to crab and then to run the front and rear steering independently is a huge advantage. There ability to downhill, side hill and climb where all increased 10 fold. The main reason that we tell you about how great they are is not to brag about how damn cool they are (ya right) but to tell you all about the principles that Pinch and myself have learned. We hope that you can apply these same ideas to all of your rigs in order to further the sport. Keep in mind that these rigs are for competition. They are very light and maneuverable and although they are designed for competition, with a little wheelbase modification they would make an excellent backyard basher. I learned alot about what is needed to compete at the Utah comps last time. I have applied similar principles to my rig after seeing Pinchy's pics and hope to be competitive with it. I think the V2 is going to be the benchmark by which other competition chassis will be measured. We's all just playing catch up right now. Great job on yer rigs guys, and thanks for posting some very good crawler design parameters. |

Wheelbase is measured from the center of the front wheel to the center of the rear wheel. On RCCrawlers, basically from the front lugnut to the rear lugnut.

Oh man, those comp crawlers are just sick! I love the low-ridin' body and the shocks pokin' out through the hood. Suddenly my idea of a "low" CG seems way to high.....

Can someone tell me where the bottom of the shocks are attached on the chassis/axle? I can't tell from the photos. Thanks Clark |

Is there any chance of finding out the length of the links for the 4 link setup. Top and Bottum Links. I'm guessing the top links are longer than the bottom. Just wondered how long the top and bottom links are. I like the stance. Clark |

Well I'm chuffed to bits. My Team chassis arrived in the post yesterday, and I've just added the gearboxes to it having stripped them from my gecko II. It's sooooooooo long, the wheel base is about 16 1/4 inches! This things gonna need a stretched limo shell on it! Well done Matt and the guys at UTRCRC, all I need now is to live in Utah instead of the UK. |
