| Stupid plastic diffs
I just switched to moab xl's and now I can't keep from stripping out the hex in the differential. I just put in two brand new diffs and stripped them both in less than one battery. Are all of yall using steel diffs, I am going to machine a set tommorow. Is this a common problem?

I never had a problem. Is anything binding? What pinion/ motor are you running?

Are you talking about the gearset inside? Wow, I guess I should get that metal gearset then for mine while I am at it. |

If you are talking about the brass insert (that grabs the splines on the axle shaft) inside the gear case stripping out that plastic hex it goes in. It sounds like you are locking your diffs with JB weld, correct? If that is true you should invest in the metal trac gear from RC4WD.

I have never stripped out the plastic side gear on my diffs. After 3 years they are starting to get some play in them but they still have not stripped. Getting the alumunum diff lockers is not a bad idea though. Great idea running the 65T motor in the rear and the 55T in the front. Clod booster, I assume he is doing it to help reduce rear axle stall by having a higher torque motor on the rear axle. When the weight transfers to the rear on a steep climb, the rear motor will have more torque to compensate for that. I do it by running a 10 tooth pinion on the front motor and a 9 tooth on the rear motor. |

thanks, so you can use different pinions instead of using different motors.

I have had my crawler locked for over 2 years with no gear breakage, but my Bro in law is having the exact same problem.. It has happend to him 2 times in less then a year and he doesn't drive much. Get an aluminum gear or a locker that will solve the problem

i'm not running the 65 turn to prevent stall. I have 2 esc's so I don't have any stall. I just like having a little extra torque in the rear end. Just a personal preferance. I locked the gears with hot glue. THis didn't start happening until I got the moabs. I guess the plastic ones are not going to cut it anymore. To the Machine shop batman!!!!!!! TALLY HOE! |

I've run Moab XL's w/ weight in them since day one. Never had an issue w/ the stock internal hexes or gears??? I use "Shoe Goo" to lock mine. |

No matter what, 3 sets of clod axles, same problem, stripping the hex out in the diff! I've tried jb welding them in... Nothing like going out and 10 minutes into crawling and ending up in 3wd or 2wd! Well i am now testing TCS clod lockers and no problems! Seem to be just what the docter ordered! http://www.thecrawlerstore.com/geartrain.html |
