Default Help with motor mounts

Hi.. i bought a used pair of motor mounts, don't know what brand are they.. but they look a lot like the thunder tech..

Well my problem is that when i install a 9T pinion it can't reach the main gear.. what i see is that the motor shaft is to short. when i mount the pinion almost on the end of the shaft, the pinion only touch the gear by something near 2 mm.. I try them that way and make a loud noise that doesn't sound normal

the motors are integy's 55 from towerhobbies.

Thank you !!

How thick is the mount? It may have been a custom machined part just made similiar to the Thundertech. Where did you buy the pinion gear? If the motor mount is the correct thickness and the pinion isn't some real short stubby version, you should have full contact across the width of the spur gear.

If you ordered the motors from tower Im guessing you got the RRP 9 tooth pinions here: http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...&I=LXEW94&P=ML

These are kinda stubby and thats prob. your problem... RC4WD makes some NICE pinions 6-12 or 13 I think... here is a link: http://rc4wdstore.com/index.php?cPath=37

Note how long the gear is...

Later,
Jake

That's more than likely your issue. Those "stubby" pinions will work fine if mounting the motor like stock right to the gearcase...but when you add the thickness of the adj. motor mount, the pinion needs to be longer to grab the spur gear.

Thank you guys yeah my pinions are Robinson Racing, and now looking at RC4WD I never notice that Robinson's are shorter :-(..

So you mean i can use these pinions with out the motor mounts? When i tried that way. the pinion do reach the spur, but is far from the spur

PS. I don't want to hack my gearbox

Could also look at the RC Guy stuff... I use his mounts and pinions with no issues... Well, not true... I don't have the clear dust covers to see my lash.. Yet...;)

No, you do have to use adj. mounts for anything lower than the stock 13 tooth pinions. What I meant was that the pinion WOULD reach the spur gear IF you didn't have to take into account the thickness of the adj. mount itself. You just need to get longer pinion gears and then you install the adj. mounts that you have.

Those stubby pinions would only work if you had an aftermarket type gearbox like something that RC4WD sells which has the adjustability for the motor designed right into the gearbox.

Here are some pics.

As you can see the pinion is in less than the middle of the gear. And i also have the pinion sittin on end of the shaft.
That one is the 10T that i will put in the rear, and in front i will use 9T

So?

With my 55t's, RC Guy mounts and pinions...I get full contact to the spur gear. Not only that, but the back end of the pinion is almost all the way on the motor shaft (I left about 1/16" between the pinion and the motor).

From the pic, the mount looks really thick...but I don't know, people have said that they use the same setup

If nothing else....spend a couple bucks and just get longer pinions.
