| Digger 2
When I went to SFR 3 yesterday I asked rx if he had retired digger and he said that he had so now the next step is to build Digger 2. I am thinking of borrowing a single tube design and making a few changes to it. On digger the problems were the width due to the gear reductions, it was as wide as it was long, and I kept breaking cases and axle tubes and cases. So lets lets look at the problems with the original and lay Digger 2 out a step at the time. problem 1 Learn to drive the damn thing. I think this will be on going. problem 2 Width Digger 2 will have lathe motors and 9t pinions no reductions problem 3 Tranny carnage. New cases will have JPS sluminum axle tubes and turn knuckles. Also aluminum gears. The aluminum cases will come after I recover from the injuries I suffer when the wife finds out i'm spending a few bucks on a new crawler. Problem 4 Bulky 1/4 scale servos. These were awsome but sometimes got hung uup on steep climbs. These will be replaced with JR 8611 digital servos. These are rated at 220 oz torque at 4.8 volts. On 6 volts these will have the same torque of the 1/4 scale and I wont have to run a seperate battery pack to power them and they have great holding power. I will still use the piggy back shocks. I liked the original ones, nice and smooth. On the batteries I want to try a diffrent route this time. Instead of a standard 6 cell battery I want to use a 4 cell 4400 mill ion battery. This is 4 oz lighter than a standard 6 cell pack and I have seen them run 10 of the 8611 servos for over 2 hours straight without having to be recharged. The drawbacks are the price which is $54 each, and having to run a voltage reducer. The ion packs put out 11.1 volts and the recharge time which is over 2 hours. All in all this will cut roughly 10 oz off the overall weight. Any extra weight will be added to the tires. There will be three sets of tires this time instead of one. Still looking around at what everyone is usuing now. And of course the truck will have a low profile with better ground clearance. |

Sounds like a good plan. And I think problem #1 is universal for most people |

Sounds sweet aubie! About the comment of your wife kickin your butt though! Lathe motors do VERY well on more voltage, I would say give em the full 11.1V, they are rated to 12V |

Will the super rooster and the reciever handle it though. Just got the word today. Once the new workshop is finished I have a new small lathe, milling machine and mig welder coming. I see some nice custom parts and tube frames in the near future. Last edited by aubie; 03-13-2005 at 10:30 AM. |

SR can do 12V I think? And the BEC will manage the extra voltage.

"I think" is the universal, cover your ass incase you're wrong, terminology. At least I think it is. |

i dont think the aluminum axle tubes are needed. There are plenty of people running plastic stock tube and not having a problem. I think the money could be better spent somewhere on the rig.

4x4 I am changing the axle tubes due to past experience. I have a tendancy to overstress parts due to not backing off the throttle so were going with the aluminum tubes.
