Grip is improved all around, going up, down, sidehills, etc. Dirt is flung right out of the hollow lugs almost as soon as its packed in keeping the grip consistent.

Man! I wish I had large rocks like this near me! I am looking forward to getting my CR-01 (got for less than $275 RTR off ebay). Been watchin this build! I only have river rock to crawl on, witch is not nearly as sticky. Life in the big city...

1badxj 08-10-2009 07:20 PM

Looks like you have alot of nice wheelin areas near you. I really like the pic where your front tire starts picking up, "thumbsup"

I like the change in tires & wheels also

LeDevil 08-10-2009 10:25 PM

Those are some good pics looks like fun "thumbsup"

meshwolf 08-11-2009 12:21 AM

Awesome spot you found there. Nice pictures as well, a real treat to watch. :)

860Crawler 08-11-2009 07:37 AM

Thanks!

This latest crawling spot on the University campus is just one area there. Just driving around the campus I could see at least 3-4 areas that would be good rock crawling. Its like the whole place was built upon a big rock outcrop sticking up from the ocean. The seawall there looks as if its made from rock they blasted out to build the campus on. The spot in the pictures is an area of the parking lot that they decided not to blast away I guess. Its paved all the way around it so it like an island

That's not as fun as it looks. The dread torque twist will just get more and more annoying as you tune your rig up.

TrickyNickro 08-12-2009 12:15 PM

UCONN has the best hoops team and now the best crawling spot.... c'mon share with us up in NH!

860Crawler 08-13-2009 10:23 AM

Unfortunately, its not the main UCONN campus, that's got the hoops and Gampel Pavilion. Thats like 45 minutes away from this campus. There's still a good amount of college girl eye candy there though 8)

860Crawler 08-22-2009 05:40 PM

I was inspired by mrklaw's thread with the spare wheel mount so i made a cheesy version of my own. Just plain sheet stock cut to about an inch wide, bent and screwed to the frame crossmember.

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...r/DSC_3199.jpg

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...r/DSC_3200.jpg

since its so thin, I figured it may vibrate or move around when driving so some of my spare scale bungee cords were untilized to keep the tire movement to a minimum

This is the aftermath of one of our scale comps last weekend. It was near some falls that are a popular fishing spot so there were scale booby traps everywhere

yes, this is like 4 feet of fishing line

This was on both rear axles

860Crawler 08-26-2009 06:02 PM

Well, I finally twisted a driveshaft to the point of failure. Lots of people on various forums complained that this is one of the first parts to fail, often within a few hours of use. Well, I can say it is the first part to fail on my rig, but its taken just over a year to happen. I use my truck like crazy too, all the time and in comps so its gets its fair share of abuse. I'd say it turned out to be a pretty reliable part compared to what I've heard and read.

front driveshaft, on the transmission. Good shot to see the twisted splines. Doesn't look all that bad actually compared to some I've seen.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...r/DSC_3209.jpg

Rear driveshaft, just ever so slightly tweaked. Its been this way for a long time now, I think its just settled into this form and would be fine for a long time to come.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...r/DSC_3212.jpg

Here's the strange part. In addition to twisting up along it length, the shaft also bent! I didn't really notice until I fit the two halves together when messing around and spinning them only to notice the shaft go around in a circle instead of spinning on itself.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...r/DSC_3214.jpg

couchee 08-27-2009 06:17 AM

wow, everytime mine look like its going to twist the ball joint just pops off haha

hoyt 08-28-2009 02:48 PM

nice rig and pictures, sucks about the drive shaft. The fishing line thing really irks me. Is it so hard to take your spent line and put it in your pocket to throw away. I love fishing and go all the time, just cant stand how some people are just that lazy.

sry bout the rant lol its really a nice rig though"thumbsup"

860Crawler 08-29-2009 01:09 PM

Thanks! I've gotten fishing line caught up in my rig a couple times, its a pain in the ass. It hasn't really broken anything though, its the weak stuff

John74 09-01-2009 01:58 AM

I never worry about breaking propshafts as they are cheap and easy to replace and i would rather they broke than something in the gearbox or axles.

Only ever broke one myself and that was in a comp a week after i brought my CR-01 just after they were released.

Mine always bend before they give up. I think the bend happens last, at the point where the twist has finally prevented the shaft from shrinking during axle movement.

My solution with the stock shafts - which I photographed and never posted - was to cut off the tube sections of the spare outer shafts, cut them down to size, and put those loose onto the shafts being used. It always seemed to work for me, because the twist only tends to happen on the exposed section of inner shaft, so will less of it exposed and free to twist, the less it happens.

EDIT: Also good to see a die-hard canti fan. I'd put cantis back on mine, if only the alu spring mounts you can get were complete, and didn't need the stock plastic fronts to make them work.

EDIT: How's the CR-01 tuned motor holding up? Happy with it?

John74 09-02-2009 06:10 AM

What did you use for the front and rear lights ? really need to get some installed on mine.

Sounds like a good idea putting extra lengths of outer shaft on there. I might try that.

I like the canti set up now. Its pretty much tweaked to where it works they way Tamiya intended. And its funky and unusual which I like as well.

The CR motor has been working great. Nice and torquey and smooth. Its got runtime forever which is a gift and a curse, sometimes you just want the damn battery to die already!

The kit comes with light buckets and two types of stickers for the head and taillights, The translucent stickers if youre going to run LEDs and the opaque stickers if youre going to run no lights. I then bought the Tamiya TLU-01 w/white LED and Tamiya red LED. For the roof I got the smaller 3mm LED

Cheers for that "thumbsup" i just found a few on fleabay so time to make some bids.

Lowered this thing. Medium springs all around, it was too high with hard springs all around. Hits the body in the left rear more than before. Maybe should invest in some short barrell springs then I can go back to hard. The medium work well at the beach though and in all the wet nasty trails.

Also, killed off my last stock spare male driveshaft half. Almost time to look into some metal units :D Not yet though, I've got another spare coming for free when my Bronco bodyset arrives, thanks Eric!

IDnewcrwlr 09-30-2009 01:15 PM

its this thread alone that makes me wish i hadnt torn and gotten rid of my cr01!!! great pics as usual and that rock course looks like a real fun place to run. .. . do you have any pics of the whole layout?

860Crawler 09-30-2009 02:20 PM

Here's a partial shot. This is literally like a quarter of the entire layout. Its huge, with rope bridges, log bridges, mud pit, and of course rocks and waterfall.

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...d/DSC_3431.jpg

I'll get a big pic when we do the Kreepy Krawl in two weeks

860Crawler 10-07-2009 04:55 PM

New lightbar installed. I broke the PL one long ago and had it glued etc. Must have glued it 30 times since almost everytime I went over the left end light broke back off again.

Never again with this kit. Thick rollbar over the lights so i shouldn't break a light off ever.

RPM lightbar for Slash

It was a bit too wide for the mounts to work on the FJ40 shell so I attached it to the PL roof rack

The spur gear is starting to give me grief. Its done its duty with the rig being used anywhere from 2 to 5 times a week for over a year. Its pretty worn so it skips a bit when the gear mesh is set, its got a section of badly worn teeth. It doesn't skip if set tight. But then it sounds like shit when the gear mesh is too tight :? So time to invest in one of those.

Just noticed the skate board in your roof rack, HA!:)

860Crawler 11-01-2009 11:34 AM

haha, I really should invest in some more realistic crawling accessories. Its like is this guy taking the offroad route to his favorite skate spot?

Bok 11-01-2009 10:20 PM

Do you still have the stock prop shafts in there Nick?

860Crawler 11-02-2009 07:41 AM

yes I do. And I've got one spare thanks to Eric. He sent me one when I got the Bronco body since I had used up my spares.

860Crawler 11-02-2009 07:47 AM

I really think all the loose diff movement puts too much stress on driveline and tranny. Roll the rig a good inch or so before the diff lock catches. Hopefully, permanent lockers gets rid of it. Then some metal prop shafts. The new planetary gears should get me by for a bit, thats my main issue at the moment, the spur gear.

I need to chill out on the purchases though...Or maybe drive it a bit less

Brett B. 11-02-2009 07:54 AM

Good pic's i like the color.

Okay, I was just wondering if the gearbox wear/damage might have been caused by too much stress that would have been taken by the stock shafts, I guess not :)

860Crawler 11-02-2009 02:23 PM

Its wierd I've always had the gear mesh set pretty good. If you moved the tires back and forth there was always just a slight gap between the teeth. I think it just took a hard stop one too many times and wore down the teeth in one area. Its got a stock pinion so no change there.

860Crawler 11-05-2009 05:13 PM

Here's the aftermath...

I have installed the short barrel springs, though they won't be used until I get another pinion.

I like how they feel just moving the chassis around. They are a little bit thicker guage wire so they seem a bit more firm.

This is a soft (red) barrel next to a medium (yellow) stocker. The wire looks about the same thickness.
