Thanks guys!

The CR01 isn't one of my favorite rigs due to the fact that the chassis is just plain ugly, but yours is an exception. I love this rig"thumbsup"

Thank you!

I know exactly what you mean. I own other crawlers, but someting about Tamiya's CR01 keeps me loving it. its the only RC that I seem to always use. its definitely my favorite in my collection of RCs.

Very nice pictures. I solved the drive shaft problem on mine by adapting some old T-Maxx drive shafts to fit on it.

Nice pics! I just saw you live in Ewa Beach. My best friend Matt lives there too, he's in the Navy. He's been there for about a year now.

Installed the 3R winch last night. I just bought a King Kong hook from RC4WD to replace the jewelery clasp on there now. Unfortunately, my DX3.0 3rd channel will not control the winch correctly because its only 2 position. It would only got forward and backward with no stop position. So I will use it with the manual control for now.

The mount is attached to the frame cross member then it it fitted into a slot on the back of the bumper for support up there.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...r/DSC_9125.jpg

I had to put some spacers under the winch to level it out and get it at the right height behind the bumper.
http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...r/DSC_9127.jpg

The mount goes down then back up again so it can clear the FJ body

Now to go out and try and get stuck somewhere.

King Kong hook replaces the jewelry clasp. This is the medium size one in black chrome.

My servo actuated switch has also been mounted (pics to come)

winch control figured out. Since the 3rd channel couldnt directly control the winch properly, this will. Plugged into the 3rd channel is a Hitec HS-55 which now swings and taps the button on the winch control. Its all held by a little aluminum mount I made and mounted to the battery hold down. I ran all the wires along the little channels on the hold down to keep them neat.

r2jkustoms pull-pal anchor. Top notch quality, almost too nice to use.

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...r/DSC_9793.jpg

It works with the medium King Kong hook. That is a relief, on the site I think it says its made for the small one.

cydog510 09-29-2010 11:07 PM

used the pull pal yet? still waitin on mine!

860Crawler 10-01-2010 08:41 PM

yes. I took it out with my TrakPower race pack, I had like 2:06 of run time! Got to use the pull pall quite a bit. I could winch the rig up some line that I would normally roll over backwards on or just sit and spin tires.

cydog510 10-03-2010 05:47 PM

sick! love the lipo run times, nutty! not as long in my DF03 or TB03 though.

rabfan 10-15-2010 08:55 PM

Wow! Some cool mods there. I have the 3R winch too but haven't installed yet.

860Crawler 10-18-2010 05:16 PM

Thanks!

cydog510 11-03-2010 02:51 PM

hey nick, you think the XL king kong hook will fit the pull pal? i cannot seem to locate a M one (shipping to canada is $12....!?!?!?).
thx.

860Crawler 11-05-2010 05:24 AM

The medium one JUST gets though the loop in the pull-pal. I'm going to say the XL one might be a bit too big. If the width of the hook is any larger it won't go. Not sure if the width increases on the hooks as well as the overall size.

cydog510 11-05-2010 11:50 AM

thank you sir

th67ss 11-08-2010 10:01 AM

Nick,

This was a great read!! And your picture's are top notch, I've read through every one of your post on this forum and on the other forums you have this rig on.

One question tho....were did the white wheel come from? They look sweat!!!

Thanks......Tom

860Crawler 11-12-2010 07:45 PM

Thanks for the kind words!

The wheels are the standard CR-01 wheels. I sprayed them with Tamiya TS-1 White.

So some major damage finally occurred today at the crawler meet. I was wheeling it through the river section at Rock Island and I hear a pop then I only have 3 wheel drive.:x I thought maybe the STRC rear axle kit might have failed. I still ran the courses in 3 wheel drive, although I didn't complete them and had to winch in a lot of places. So I took apart the rear axle when I got home.:x:x Screws and nuts galore, what a pain. Pull the STRC axle and the splines look perfect. Its the splines in the bevel gear set which I blew, but only on what I guess you'd call the "short" side of the axle. Ordered two sets (just in case) of bevel gears, Tamiya part#51326, from Tower on a rush order so I can have them before I head off to PA next Saturday.

860Crawler 11-18-2010 05:24 PM

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...r/DSC_1489.jpg

I only changed the bad gear. Since the diffs are locked these gears never rotate on each other. You can kind of see the smoothed over splines in the old one if you "magnify, enhance" LOL

http://i38.photobucket.com/albums/e1...r/DSC_1491.jpg

Axle was good ..... it was the pot metal that blew out?

860Crawler 11-19-2010 05:17 PM

yeah that pot metal gear was pretty smooth on the inside. I cleaned off the axle first expecting it to be worn down but its perfect.

Many, Many Thanks

I just purchased three Tamiya cr01 FJ-40's for me and my two sons (ages 41 & 35) they both drive and destroy the real thing (thought they and I, would get a kick out of these) your tutorial is exceptional. I'm ordering several hop-ups you've listed. could you list all your electronics manufacturer & model:
Radio, transmitter, receiver, servo, battery, esc. etc.
also what would you change if you could.
You have paved the way for me to build a good ride with your testing and results posted. Thanks Again.
Tom"thumbsup"

cydog510 03-08-2011 01:12 AM

yes nick has done a bang p job of documenting his CR-01 experience. if i could change anything from the design perspective, i would give it a slipper clutch, such as the SCX10 has, other than that, it is a great rig. as i'm sure you've read, drive shafts will eventually fail, metal ones are suggested if you change motors and/or tyres. have fun, they will be pleased i am sure

wetvettetom 03-08-2011 09:54 AM

Slipper clutch

Cydog, do you know the manufacturer or item number for a slipper clutch
that would work in the CR01?
Thanks, Tom

cydog510 03-08-2011 02:47 PM

no tom, sorry, i have given the idea some serious thought but cannot come up with a solution other than putting in a whole new transmission. i really like the planetary gear box, th e slipper clutch idea just seems too much hassle, perhaps they will pop one in on the CR-02.....

860Crawler 03-09-2011 03:33 PM

Yeah I'm thinking the same thing. Probably would have to swap out the CR transmission for another that incorporates a slipper

cydog510 03-09-2011 05:12 PM

hey nick, you still snowed in? or are you gonna have some more of your high quality pics for us?

wetvettetom 03-09-2011 10:32 PM

Disregard the slipper clutch, what is the one thing you changed from standard that you like the best (best upgrade) ??

wetvettetom 03-14-2011 07:08 PM

Thanks Again !!

Nick, Thanks again for your documentation, what one upgrade item you used, do you recommend the most. ?? :ror:
