| Powder Coating Frame Rails
Well we just got around to powder coating the frame rails and end caps on my CR-01 with a black wrinkle finish. All I can say is WOW! I think they look great! Let me know what you think. I plan on doing the Tamiya bent links when they come in as well. This is a very durable finish. I was almost going to do them in a military green but I will save that for another project. I will post pictures of them installed soon. -Peace |

| Frame back together...SWEET!!!
Let me know what you think now. I ended up installing a front bumper on the rear but cut off the top hoop. It looks OK I think while protecting rear of body. Do not worry, I got Defender body from TSC, painted (Thanks Guys!) I still plan on painting Toyota body. Now I can enjoy CR and take my time painting and detailing Toyota body. -Peace |

very cool. i have a bit of exp. in powdercoating. quite the fun process... unless you run into outgassing. then it's a nightmare, and time to break out the AGP. |

| Yes it is fun to do. Every time your parts are in the oven you are like a kid...can't wait to see the finished product. No experience with "Outgassing"/agp. Explain?

ever coated a used manifold from an old gasser or english sport car ? they are cast aluminum, and when heated the porosity of the metal expands and contracts causeing the little voids to force through the surface creating mico bubbles. this is often why a crappy podwer job is actually far worse than paint. paint is porous and allows the substrate to breathe. the powdercoating is a 100 % bonded molecular structure in it's perfect state. allowing corrosion to fester. agp is a product that helps combat this but using a low temp cure epoxy. now that i just totally killed this thread, i will try and bring it back. nice job on getting that wrinkle to flow evenly on the ends. that is tricky Last edited by crunky; 03-21-2009 at 03:33 PM. |

all you have to do is pre bake cast parts at 450 for about an hour, then let cool down then coat, this prevents outgassing

but not stop it entirely. cast iron can do the same thing. sometimes the longer you bake it the more outgassing can occur. | |

never had a problem with og since prebaking, i've done countless old tractor manifolds, old flathead manifolds, blocks, heads, old cast iron furniture, pump housings, blah blah blah, anyway i'll stop highjacking this thread now |
