Default Should I or Shouldn't I

Okay guys, I have been debating this for the last week. I have a chance to pick up a used CR-01 for $100. It is a roller and comes with a 55t motor. What are the pros and cons of the CR-01?

Pros: Cool body shell, plastic TVP monster truck looking chassis, 4 linked, coil sprung action is pretty cool to watch.

Cons: Planetary tranny gears are plastic so dropping a high torque motor will be asking for trouble down the line, COG way too high, phillips hardware, e-clips, overly complex rig just not as capable as an SCX10 and not too many upgrades can be done to it for strength/durability at the same cost as an Axial based rig, stock tires suck, no beadlock wheels with the kit.

I wanted a CR-01 a while back before I built a Tundra High Lift. CR-01 is sort of a cross between a crawler/scaler with a lifted monster truck look to it. Imagine a more detailed HPI Crawler King.

So I would need to upgrade the tranny gears? I can work with the COG and phillips hardware will be replaced anyways. I already have 2 SCX10's and was just looking for something different and I thought for $100 who could go wrong if it needs some upgrades that is fine.

Yup look over the CR-01 manual off Tamiya's website. What's cool about the aluminum frame is there's so many holes you can custom fab whatever body you want on there without worrying if you drilled equally across the members. The planetary gears are pretty cool but I don't know if they make hardened aluminum or even steel gears for them. Tamiya also has their own funky module so I'd swap over to 48p or 32p asap on your spur/pinion.

You're going to find most if not all your upgrades online/overseas...for my Tamiya cars/trucks I only buy GPM, Junfac, 3Racing (rarely), and Tamiya upgrades. I think for $100 if it comes with a body in decent shape and you want something different go for it! You should check out Tamiya Crawler for more in depth help on what the necessary upgrades are.

the cr-01 is one of my fav trucks to run. dump the crappy cantileaver and go with a cheep coilover set up and keep the plastic drive shafts and you wont have trouble with the gears. i have had mine with a 55 turn lathe motor and i have had no issues. 2years!!! i run a proline cherokee and super swampers and it wheels like my real cherokee. its def not a crawler but it holds it own. plus like you said 100 bucks!!!! that kit new is like 350. buy it and send it to me ill kick you 20 bucks lol

I don't have any experience with any other crawlers, the CR01 is my first one. Out of the box, it's fun at first but I soon realized how much more it COULD do. Ditched the cantilever suspension, new wheels and tires, I run proline wheels with chisel tires. I upgraded to a longer travel shock and traxxas drive shafts(I kept twisting the stock ones up like prezels). Now it does pretty darn good. I'm thinking I may pick up some stick on wheel weights and put them inside the wheels to bring down the cog a bit though.

Here are some pics... it also came with a Dingo body. Also from the looks of it there isn't much runtime on it....

I think I am going to go with the Unimog body I got several years ago. I went over the chassis again and it is going to need shocks, links and some screws then it will be up and running..

$60, that was a sweet deal. CR01 is a fun truck, it gets compared to the SCX10 often but it's sort of apples and oranges in my opinion. Plus, If you already have a SCX10, it's fun to drive something different.

since you've got two scx's id suggest upgrading the shocks on one of them and put the scx10 shocks on your cr. my transmission went on my cr... next thing you know ive got an axial trans, driveshafts, and shocks on it. the trans lowers your cg considerably.
