Default new chassis: lower cog, higher clearance

here's the idea: lay down the E-Maxx tranny on a pan, with the battery and electronics on the right side. the left-hand plate will be a bit of a jigsaw puzzle, but this shot gives you the general idea. the wheelbase has also been stretched considerably, out to 12-1/2 at least in this proto stage. the motor's 1/2 inch lower, the center clearance is 1/2 inch higher, shaft angles are a bit more friendly. should be a big improvement once it's done.

the latest progress. i know it's a little hack-tastic. the upper links (still a dream) will triangulate at the axle, the electronics will sit on top of the battery, and i'm still thinking about where to hide the HS-55 shift servo.

all done but for the shift cable. i'm using an airplane control rod. its first crawl went well, much more stable than the original chassis, but the longer wb means the breakover angle is the same, even with the extra 1/2 inch of clearance. so maybe it's time for some M2Ks.

more pics:

that's a Pede tire underneath. the red cable operates the shifter.

an overhead shot gives you the general layout. with the wide chassis and 14"wb i'll have to use a 1/8 scale body. i've got an F-150 quadcab at the LHS that i'll pick up this weekend.

mandatory artic shot. this chassis is a huge improvement over the TLT plates, although the longer wb means the breakover anlge remains the same as before. methinks a set of Masher 2000s is next on the list.

so now i have to wonder, with a 14" wb and more E-Maxx parts than TLT (i'm down to just the waxles now) is it still a TLT crawler? or a Maxx-based crawler? or just another mutant?

threw an old body on, cut the hell out of it, and crawled. i didn't have the heart to cut up the flamed Bronco but this one, who cares.

body mounts were easy. when i cut the side plates they were taped together to assure micro-precision symmetry. i drilled 2 holes for each shock mount, not knowing which one would work. the ones that didn't work became body mounts. just use a post-type mount screwed in from behind (is that term gonna make Digler excited?)

it's a good enough body, but the grille/headlight stickers look like they were drawn by a crack baby. prepare yourself for a lot of hand-painting if you want it to look like anything.

Default goin' 60/40

used Revo links for the lower link, booty-fab uppers, Savage (or as the hillbillies here call 'em, "Salvage") shock shafts and got another 1-1/2 inches into the wheelbase. carbon-fiber tubes on the shafts keep spring length the same. we'll see how much it helps after racing today.
